Abstract/Notes: "...In terms of instructional methodology, Belgium has had a particularly interesting history. It has gone through three distinct phases of education as far as pre-school is concerned. From 1890 until about 1927 Frobel was a very strong influence in Belgian pre-schools, and most of the training was done with his methods. From 1927 through 1950 the work of Montessori became particularly important. This is not to suggest that Frobel's teachings were discarded entirely, but only that Montessori's methods were more popular..."

Abstract/Notes: The role of important figures and their interconnections has been vital in the existence and development of the New Education Fellowship (NEF). Already from the very beginning the NEF struggled with rivalries partly due to the adoration some of these coryphaei enjoyed by their followers. This affected the so highly-praised solidarity and close cooperation for the benefit of the child. During the 1920s and 1930s a conflict ran on between Montessorians and Decrolyans, culminated at the Locarno Congress (1927) and actually held the potency to undermine the NEF. These two camps propagated Il Metodo (1909) or La Méthode Decroly (1922), and for this purpose made use of Pour l’ère nouvelle, one of the NEF journals. We particularly observed this rivalry within the context of the Low Countries, Belgium and The Netherlands, although the conflict had a wider international character. In The Netherlands, the controversy carried on by the ambiguous Montessorian-Decrolyan Cornelia Philippi-Siewertsz van Reesema, who supported an ‘experimental eclecticism’, ended in a division of the Montessori Society. Even Montessori’s son, Mario, interfered by publishing a «philippic». In the long run, top people as Ensor, Ferrière, Claparède and Bovet – the last two likewise advocates of experimental eclecticism – were compelled to take up a position in order to restrain the conflict, to emphasise again the NEF’s internationality and to guarantee its survival.

Abstract/Notes: This book about the Westerweel Group tells the fascinating story about the cooperation of some ten non-conformist Dutch socialists and a group of Palestine Pioneers who mostly had arrived in the Netherlands from Germany and Austria the late thirties. With the help of Joop Westerweel, the headmaster of a Rotterdam Montessori School, they found hiding places in the Netherlands. Later on, an escape route to France via Belgium was worked out. Posing as Atlantic Wall workers, the pioneers found their way to the south of France. With the help of the Armée Juive, a French Jewish resistance organization, some 70 pioneers reached Spain at the beginning of 1944. From here they went to Palestine. Finding and maintaining the escape route cost the members of the Westerweel Group dear. With some exceptions, all members of the group were arrested by the Germans. Joop Westerweel was executed in August 1944. Other members, both in the Netherlands and France, were send to German concentration camps, where some perished.
