Abstract/Notes: Costa Rica opened the doors to its first preschool, Escuela Maternal de Costa Rica in 1925 in the city of San José. This article attempts a pedagogical analysis of educational practice as taught by the country´s first teachers and understand the philosophical bases and profile of the that they aspire to educate. The results were obtained according to a methodology of symbolic interaction from collecting and analyzing original manuscripts, scientific and literary writings, historical photographs, and items recovered from the former preschool building, such as puppets and furniture. The preschool promoted organized and free play, as proposed by German pedagogue Friedrich Fröebel. It also established a school canteen, and emphasized manual skills as proposed by the Agazzi sisters. A state-of-the-art gym was also planned based on the principals of Belgian pedagogue Decroly. Other features of this pioneer Costa Rican institution included use of the psychoanalytic method, and healthcare support for families as established by Italian pedagogue Maria Montessori. The end result was an eclectic vision that significantly impacted twentieth century early childhood education.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this dissertation will be to survey and analyze American writings on Maria Montessori and her educational system, in order to show how the idea of Montessori education has interacted with some changing American ideas and social forces. These changes in social and intellectual currents can be likened to a shift from centrifugal to centripetal force; or to the expansion and then the contraction of a universe. The central metaphor is the same. It is applicable to, and illustrative of, much about the changing social and educational scene in America. The writings on Montessori, examined against this framework, should provide a new view on certain changes in American educational thinking.

Abstract/Notes: This section includes a selection of Maria Montessori’s key writings that reflect the broad range of her body of work and that represent ideas that are fundamental for Montessori education today. Her writings are multifaceted and sometimes challenging for today’s readers because they contain philosophical expositions, almost arcane vocabulary, and even references to biblical texts. In this section, the chapter sequence is generally organized by year of first publication to follow the evolution of Montessori’s scholarly work.
