Abstract/Notes: The late 1920s and early 1930s in Italy saw the peak of a process establishing Montessori pedagogy which would come to an end within a decade with the drastic closure of all Montessori schools in the country. This epilogue, which would also be seen in those years in other countries with a similar political regime, calls for an analysis of the relations between the creator of the most famous and widespread pedagogical method in the world and the political regime that favoured the application and dissemination of the method in Italy - a country in which it had still not encountered those conditions of realisation that would instead come about in the crucial years of the rise of Fascism and the completion of the totalitarian state. The essay examines the main events marking the history of Montessori’s conflictual relationship with Fascism in the years 1924-1934, from the initial contacts characterising it and leading up to the final break, after which Montessori finally left Italy until the end of World War II.

Abstract/Notes: Opening the issue of Pour l’ère nouvelle (January 1927), Adolphe Ferrière announced that L’Educazione Nazionale, directed by Giuseppe Lombardo Radice, would be the Italian partnership of the educational press officially committed with the New Education Fellowship. The strong relation between the two scholars was based on a shared vision of education as really focused on the release of children’s natural energies. The cultural mission of the Italian journal was not an easy one to accomplish, due to the increasingly heavy atmosphere characterizing the Italian public life, signed by the turning of Fascism into an authoritarian Regime. Up to the turning point of the thirties the review often tried to draw attention onto several themes and figures related to the progressive expansion of the New Education. Unfortunately, the involution of Fascism hindered the journal’s activity, finally forcing its closure in 1933.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s Il Metodo della Pedagogia Scientifica was published at the end of the 1910s. The text enjoyed great success after its publication, both in Italy and abroad. Over the course of the following decades, this work underwent numerous changes: various editions were published and numerous translations made, while the author herself added many sections and deleted others from the original draft. In this essay, I examine the first three editions of Il Metodo to analyze the changes that were made and their relation to the advent of fascism. This essay, divided into three distinct parts that follow the first three editions of the work, explores how Montessori was conditioned by fascism and how fascist educators both perceived her work and influenced the changes made to the text.
