[This Master Thesis proposes an analysis and a reflection of school spaces designed by Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger (1932- ), between 1960 and 2007. The set of works analyzed were assigned some design themes with typical interest in school spaces. These themes have origin in the educational model developed by Italian doctor Maria Montessori (1879-1952) at the beginning of the 20th century. In this context, stands out the following themes: 1) The versatility of the classroom, one of the themes based on the educational model proposed by Maria Montessori and one of the most relevant themes in the architect's work; 2) The distributive and social functions of the central space, similar to the piazza of Malaguzzi (1920-1994), with influences from Froebel (1782-1852); 3) The idea of "learning street" of the corridor, becoming a flexible space. The study of these subjects, among others, was essential to understand Herman Hertzbergers' schools and, consequently, his work in general.]

[SUMMARY Herman Hertzberger belongs to a group of architects that understand the architecture-pedagogy binomial as indissoluble. Ever since the beginning of the 20th Century, they have embraced the complementarity of these two disciplines in the educational world, and have revealed the way architecture and pedagogy collaborate through the recreation of a model for society and therefore influence the place where education takes place. In this context, Hertzberger understands architecture as a pedagogical tool as well as an opportunity for the configuration of a space for interaction. Hertzberger´s work confirms a commitment with the child as the centre of the learning process. Moreover, the architect demonstrates major interest in collective values, together with an understanding of architecture as a basis-foundation for freedom. His direct precedents are the ideas of his teacher, Aldo van Eyck. However, it is in his educational architecture where these can be radically observed. The numerous projects that he has designed cover all the phases of the educational process: from those of early childhood to university studies. In these projects he has developed a wide repertoire of design strategies linked to the Active school and the Montessori Method. His extensive work allows him to try out the full scope of the idea of a building being like a city, by blurring the limits between public and private space, the school and its environment, in a journey that crosses from the classroom to the city.]

Abstract/Notes: Herman Hertzberger designs schools to function like cities. Schools and cities, he contends, can be read in many ways and are challenging, inspirational and inviting. School is where you can withdraw and adopt a position with respect to others, where you learn to take a place in society. Besides a presentation of Hertzberger's 30-plus built schools and a number of unbuilt ones, the sociologist Abram de Swaan addresses Hertzberger's work in an essay, discussing how school architecture impacts the social development of children. De Swaan pays tribute to Hertzberger as a pre-eminently 'sociological' architect. Includes details related to various Montessori schools projects: De Jordaan (Amsterdam); De Eilanden (Amsterdam); Montessori College Oost (Amsterdam); Delft Montessori School (Delft, Netherlands); De Eilanden (Amdsterdam, unrealized).

In the architect’s world, strongly conditioned by rules, laws and, in most of the cases, by unreasonable haste on the deadlines, it is often forgotten that architecture has a purpose: the people. In that context, in the 60s, architects like the Dutch Herman Hertzberger, questioned the existing project processes until then, and showed their concern about aspects related to persons, such as social relationships, space perception, or the variable needs of privacy and collectivity. Actions daily associated to determine building typologies, such as living, working, or studying, started to be perceived from a different point of view. The office building of Centraal Beheer, in Apeldoorn, or the Montessori School in Delft, both designed by Hertzberger in 1967 and 1960 respectively, are the two best examples. These pieces reinvent and stimulate the relationship opportunities of their inhabitants: they multiply the functions of objects and places, by offering a new use to the transition zones -with the “in-between” concept-, and by involving people in the birth of the architecture. This is the starting point of this dissertation, which begins with a research about the key concepts of Hertzberger’s methodology and ends up with a selection of his best buildings. Study cases are implemented with other contemporary cases, in order to confirm the evolution and permanence of his archetypes.
