Abstract/Notes: The current agenda for mental health in schools is considered in relation to the concept of mental health and how it has been iterated in schools in the UK. Key contributions from education pioneers are outlined, providing a time line for the first half of the twentieth century particularly informed by psychoanalysis. Mid twentieth century the term mental health begins to be used explicitly and we see the emergence of mental health counselling in schools. Developments culminate in Wall’s (1955) landmark book Education and Mental Health, which set out a whole school approach. In the latter part of the twentieth century we see a move towards a targeted approach, and the curriculum development for Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) and the consolidation of current policy drivers for mental health are set out. It is argued that in the future, in light of COVID-19, we will see new bridges between home and school, with schools acting more as community hubs supporting the mental health of children and their families.

Abstract/Notes: This research paper will seek to address the ensuing principal research question: “What has been the role of early childhood education for the mentally ill child?” The Montessori principles which can be found in the proposed research lies in the fact that relative research undertaken on the role of mentally ill children's education still continue to be in its infancy stage. There are a number of academic publications which have focused on the identification of key areas in need of further study between students‟ social, emotional wellbeing, mental health and their school success as well as academic achievement. This research aims to investigate to what extent Maria Montessori„s argument could be significant for today‟s educational policies for the mentally ill. Montessori studied her mentally disabled patients, listening and carefully noting their response to her attempts to implement Séguin's educational methods, as well as their progress in becoming increasingly independent and verbal. The study will target this void by enunciating, refining and encompassing some of the recent hypothetical viewpoints of Montessori education and mental care.

Creativity as a Gateway to Mental Health: A Burnout Recovery Journey
Available from: St. Catherine University

Abstract/Notes: This research explored creativity and flow state as a means of overcoming symptoms of burnout and supporting mental wellness. In this self-study the subject participated in creating art using a variety of media for seven weeks. Additionally, the subject kept multiple streams of data to closely examine the main symptoms of stress and burnout, including an in-depth look at sleep patterns. Other data collected included flow achievement, pre and post study surveys, daily journals, and individual session check-ins. Data suggested that over the seven-week period, sleep became more regular and the subject felt better immediately after participating in creative activities. Additional research over a longer period of time, along with a holistic recovery plan, may prove to be a form of stress reduction and burnout recovery.
