Abstract/Notes: Fall of 2005 marks the 12th anniversary of Nancy McCormick Rambusch's death. As the founder of the American Montessori Society and as its first president, Rambusch reintroduced Maria Montessori to America at a time--1960--when education for the young was floundering, and a second look at the Montessori method, which had changed the early childhood landscape for the better in the early 20th century, was sorely needed. Rambusch was unique among educators. One of her other great accomplishments was from 1958 to 1963 when she assisted in the establishment of over 400 Montessori schools in the United States and continued working with teacher training programs for the American Montessori Society before moving on to many other innovative projects. In this article, the author discusses some of her influences in education.

Abstract/Notes: Fifty years later, I continue to be involved with AMS, currently as chair of the Archives Committee and a member of the Development Committee, but I've also worn many other hats: AMS Board member, Board president, interim executive director, and Heads of Schools representative to the board. From the beginning (she founded AMS in I960, when she was 33 years old), Nancy's mission was to "Americanize" the educational philosophy created by Dr. Maria Montessori, for our country's Early Childhood programs, including those in public schools. Nancy was a visionary, a gifted speaker, a powerful leader, a persuasive advocate for children and their families-she was one of the founders of Head Start-and a proponent of excellent child care.
