Abstract/Notes: The Freedom of Education Act in the Dutch Constitution ensures that all schools are funded by the government which has made it possible to incorporate alternative education as a substantial part of public primary and secondary education in the Netherlands. About 10% of all Dutch schools implement an alternative educational model, such as Dalton, Montessori, Freinet, Jenaplan or Waldorf. Many Montessori schools that were founded in the early twentieth century, such as the first Montessori high school founded 1930 in Amsterdam, remain open today. There are currently 219 Montessori schools in the Netherlands, all of which are publicly funded. Historical developments in The Netherlands paved the way for Montessori schools to practice an adapted version of Montessori’s pedagogy, giving rise to an ongoing debate on the implementation of the Montessori method across the Netherlands.
