Abstract/Notes: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przypomnienie głównych założeń, jakie sformułowała Maria Montessori na temat rozwoju dziecka i organizacji procesu edukacyjnego, jako punktów krytycznych w rozważaniach nad koncepcją kształcenia w zakresie poznawania środowiska społeczno-przyrodniczego. W pedagogice Montessori wskazana koncepcja przybiera postać tzw. Kosmicznej Edukacji. Kosmiczna Edukacja jest unikatowym podejściem w pracy z dziećmi w wieku od 6 do 12 lat. W artykule wyjaśniono ideę Edukacji Kosmicznej, wskazano związek między potrzebami dziecka a programem poznawania środowiska społeczno-przyrodniczego. Opisano istotę Wielkich i Kluczowych Lekcji, jako ośrodków dziecięcych badań i dociekań. Zaprezentowano także rekomendowany przez Montessori sposób poznawania przez dzieci fundamentalnych potrzeba człowieka, będący inspiracją dla praktyki szkolnej. Podstawą do zebrania materiału empirycznego była analiza treści, przeprowadzona w celu scharakteryzowania aktualnych osiągnięć w ramach wybranego tematu.

Abstract/Notes: Erken çocukluk dönemi, gelişimin en hızlı olduğu ve hızlı bir değişimin gerçekleştiği zamandır. Bu döneme özgü çocuğun gelişimini ve eğitimini açıklamaya çalışan pek çok kuram vardır. Okul öncesi eğitimde etkili olan kuramcılardan biri de Maria Montessori’dir. Montessori eğitimi, çocukları kişisel gelişimleriyle birlikte; uyumlu sosyal ilişki, doğa ile uyum ve son olarak güzel bir yaşam için bütünsel olarak geliştirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Montessori bu düşüncesini “Doğa hayatın öğretmenidir. Onun gittiği yolu izlemek gerekir.” sözüyle vurgulamaktadır. Ülkemizde Montessori Yöntemine karşı ilginin oldukça eskiye dayalı olduğu ancak yaygınlaşması açısından dünyanın diğer ülkeleriyle kıyaslandığında kısmen geç kalındığı söylenebilir. Okul öncesi fen öğretiminde Maria Montessori’nin görüşleri, materyalleri ve etkinlik örnekleri ile ilgili literatür araştırmasının alana katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada Montessori Yönteminde fen eğitimi ayrıntılarıyla incelenmiştir.

Abstract/Notes: This reflection paper is the result of an analytical exercise around the experiences of Maria Montessori as a scholar and feminist woman between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Following a chronological order —not necessarily linear— of the most significant historical aspects analyzed in the light of different sources of study (conferences, books, research, articles, among others), it is intended to highlight the particular influence of the pedagogical elaborations of a woman in the educational field; a woman who lived in a time when social and cultural reality only valued the female role as a homemaker and denied their value in science, still, she manages to venture into the academic and research territory. I present comments and reflections of this excursus aiming to restore, to a certain extent, the philosophical dignity of the renowned pedagogue, that is, the vindication of her thought beyond the Method application perspective. The emphasis is on examining the pedagogical work of Maria Montessori under a lens that amplifies the reflection of a life characterized by a properly feminine and feminist style in an Italy that, galloping between the old and the new century, saw the birth of a New emancipated Woman, able to confront the positivism of the macho monopoly of her time. Consequently, this philosopher, anthropologist, doctor, pedagogue and feminist —with the help of an important participation of women who marked her history— establishes a complete educational revolution in Italy, and later international impact.

Square Pegs in Round Holes: Montessori Principals' Perceptions of Science Education in Texas Public Schools

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of Texas public Montessori school principals as instructional leaders in science. Twelve public Montessori school principals were interviewed for this study. Two research questions were used: How do public Montessori principals perceive Texas science standards in public Montessori Elementary classrooms? How do principals view their role as an instructional leader in elementary science related to teachers' effectiveness and student outcomes? Research question one resulted in the following themes: (a) aligning curricula to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), (b) engaging science instruction as integrated and hands-on lessons, (c) emphasizing required district and state assessments, and (d) incorporating traditional teaching methodologies to support Montessori instruction. Research question two yielded common themes: (a) balancing Montessori methodologies and philosophies in public school settings with competing demands, (b) monitoring assessment scores as the determination of student success, (c) working in collaboration to support teacher effectiveness, and (d) providing resources and support to teachers. Implications for Montessori practitioners: paradox of Montessori education in a public school setting, strong support for science in classrooms from the principal and a need for continued research around Montessori education in public school settings.

Abstract/Notes: The purposes of this study are to determine the views of teachers about Montessori science education, to discuss the Montessori approach in detail and make suggestions in this regard. The study was designed as a case study which is a qualitative research method. The participants were selected based on the criterion sampling method that is a purposive sampling method. In this regard, 7 upper elementary teachers and 8 middle school science teachers who are trained in Montessori teacher education programs participate in the study. Data is collected through a semi-structured interview. The collected data is analyzed with content analysis and descriptive analysis techniques from qualitative data analysis techniques. Findings suggest that the Montessori approach encourages children to work freely throughout the entire education but expects them to be responsible for their education. To achieve this, the learning environment, the teaching methods and techniques, and the assessment and evaluation methods take a highly flexible structure. This flexible structure of the approach allows individualization for each child. From the teachers' point of view, it is understood that the Montessori approach focuses on providing a nurturing environment where each child is respected and encouraged, where social interaction is intense, rather than focusing on academic education. In light of these findings, some suggestions for the implementation of the approach are presented. / Bu araştırmanın amacı, Montessori fen eğitimine ilişkin öğretmenlerin görüşlerini belirlemek, bu görüşler doğrultusunda Montessori yaklaşımını detaylı bir şekilde ele almak ve bu konuda önerilerde bulunmaktır. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması olarak desenlenmiştir. Katılımcılar, amaçlı örnekleme türlerinden ölçüt örnekleme göre belirlenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda araştırmaya uluslararası Montessori eğitmen eğitimi programlarına katılmış 7 ilkokul ikinci kademe (4,5 ve 6.sınıf) sınıf öğretmeni ve 8 ortaokul (7 ve 8.sınıf) fen bilgisi öğretmeni dâhil edilmiştir. Veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formuyla toplanmıştır. Toplanan verilerin analizinde nitel veri analiz tekniklerinden içerik analizi ve betimsel analiz kullanılmıştır. Bulgular Montessori yaklaşımının; çocukların tüm eğitim öğretim sürecinde özgür çalışmalarını teşvik eden fakat onlardan kendi eğitimlerinden sorumlu olmalarını bekleyen, bunu sağlayabilmek için öğrenme ortamını, öğretim yöntem ve tekniklerini ve ölçme ve değerlendirme yöntemlerini son derece esnek bir yapıya büründüren bir yaklaşım olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Yaklaşımın bu esnek yapısı her çocuk için bireyselleştirilmesine imkân tanımaktadır. Öğretmenlerin görüşlerinden Montessori yaklaşımının akademik eğitime odaklanmak yerine her çocuğun bireysel farklılıklara saygı duyulan ve teşvik edilen, sosyal etkileşimin yoğun olduğu besleyici bir ortam sağlamaya odaklandığı anlaşılmaktadır. Bu bulgular ışığında yaklaşımın uygulanabilmesine dair bazı öneriler sunulmuştur.

Abstract/Notes: This article examines the role played by the conferences of the New Education Fellowship (NEF) in the emerging disciplinary field of the sciences of education between the two world wars. As Fuchs points out in an article in the present issue, the field of education at this time was being internationalized, and, being an international movement, the field impacted on by the NEF was international in scope.1 As will be seen, the ideas and practices of the new education were mediated by national cultural differences and thus their impact on the disciplinary field varied from nation to nation.2 In addition, the development of the field in terms of journals, conferences and its institutionalization within nations was uneven, which presents further difficulties when trying to evaluate the impact of the NEF's conferences. Much of the following discussion focuses on their impact on the disciplinary field in England though, as will be seen, not exclusively so. One of the distinguishing features of the NEF other than its international scope was that it was a movement that connected lay enthusiasts for the educational reforms associated with the new education with major figures in the developing disciplines of psychology and education, such as Carl Gustav Jung, Jean Piaget and John Dewey. The relation between these lay and professional constituencies is examined and conclusions drawn regarding the professionalizing process in the field and the impact of the conferences on educational research and its institutionalization.

The Comparison of the Intuitive Mathematic Skills of Preschool Children Who Take Education According to Ministry of National Education Preschool Education Program and Montessori Approach

Abstract/Notes: This study analyzed intuitive mathematics abilities of preschool children and to ascertain whether there was a difference between children who were educated according to the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) preschool education program and the Montessori approach. It was also examined whether the intuitive mathematics abilities of the children who were educated according to the MoNE program and Montessori approach showed a significant difference according to variables of gender, duration of pre-school education, and educational levels of parents. The study sample of the study consisted of 121 children (56 girls, 65 boys) aged between 60-72 months. The data was collected via “Personal Information Form” and “Intuitive Mathematics Ability Scale” developed by Güven (2001). Intuitive mathematical abilities of children who were educated according to the Montessori program were more developed compared to those of children educated according to MoNE program. There was no significant difference in intuitive mathematical abilities according to duration of preschool education, education levels of parents. As a result of the study, a significant difference was observed in the intuitive math abilities of the children trained according to the MoNE program in favor of the girls, whereas no significant difference was observed trained according to the Montessori approach. The results are discussed in light of the relevant literature.
