Abstract/Notes: This qualitative study reveals the experiences of teachers who work in public preschools using their initiative and effort to implement Montessori education in their classes. Data were collected from five Montessori-inspired teachers from different cities in Turkey. Study teachers were well known for their Montessori practices. Since they were in different regions, they were interviewed by conference call. The researchers asked them to explain experiences related to difficulties they encountered while applying the Montessori method, as well as the outcomes they obtained. Results showed that despite reactions from their colleagues in terms of material procurement, activities, and teaching styles, they continued to practice the Montessori philosophy. Although this initiative is a difficult process, teachers willingly preparing and using resources and supports effectively can create positive outcomes for the educators, families, and children. The experiences and efforts of the teachers in this study will provide support to new initiating teachers and reveal the need to develop educational policies that support different educational approaches.

The Montessori Method is an education system and was created by Maria Montessori. Maria Montessori is an Italian pedagogue and the first female doctor in her country. The Montessori system puts the child in the center and, acting on the principle of relative to the child, is based on an environment created suitable for the child. Considering the interests and abilities of the child, it accepts the individual learning speed and creates a flexible education process based on this. The Montessori method is a synthesis; It aims for children to realize and discover the potential within them and to create their characters. He also argues that the child needs a regulated space and freedom to reach their potential. It is observed that scientific studies on the subject of Montessori are given importance in our country and their studies have increased in recent years. In this study, it is aimed to see the reliability and validity of this method and to give an idea for new researches by examining the theses and articles written between 2010-2021 about the Montessori method and its applications in our country, according to the determined criteria. This study is a qualitative research and criterion learning method and document scanning (analysis) technique, which are purposeful learning strategies, were used. Sources were scanned with the words "montessori" from Google Academy, Dergipark and National Thesis Center data environments, and a total of 84 studies, including 48 thesis studies and 36 article studies, were reached. Considering the findings obtained from the research; It has been determined that the intensity of the studies on the Montessori method in our country belongs to the last 5 years. It can be said that most of the studies were conducted at the preschool level. In the conclusion sections of almost all of the studies, it was stated that a change was observed in favor of the children who received education with the Montessori method.

Abstract/Notes: Problem Statement: Further studies on Montessori teachers are required on the grounds that the Montessori approach, which, having been applied throughout the world, holds an important place in the alternative education field. Yet it is novel for Turkey, and there are only a limited number of studies on Montessori teachers in Turkey. Purpose of Study: The aim was to investigate views on the Montessori approach by the teachers who serve at the schools applying the Montessori approach. Methods: Research data was collected by the basic qualitative research, one of the qualitative research methods. Descriptive analysis method was used in analysis of the qualitative data. Nine teachers serving at three different schools in Ankara province applying Montessori approach were interviewed. Findings and Results: Eight main themes were determined upon data analysis; namely, education on Montessori approach, basic qualities required for teachers applying Montessori approach, adequacy of education on Montessori approach, in-service training on the challenges experienced by Montessori teachers, plans of teachers for self-development, following existing studies in Turkey on Montessori approach, views on studies on Montessori approach, and views on the criticisms towards Montessori approach. Conclusions and Recommendations: All teachers confirmed that they internalized the approach upon training in line with Montessori philosophy. They emphasized that they received training covering all the educational fields, yet the implementation dimension was inadequate due to training without the involvement of children. Furthermore, they suggested that all the schools in Turkey were opened by commercial motives, and as such these schools failed to comply with the standards of the institutions providing education on the basis of Montessori approach. They asserted that all criticisms towards Montessori approach would be proved to be groundless upon implementation of the approach. It was seen that experienced supervisors, in-service training, and scientific studies on Montessori approach were required.

Abstract/Notes: Within the scope of Montessori education system, which has been widely applied in Turkey in recent years, “prepared environment”, “didactic materials” and “prepared adult” concepts have been frequently emphasized. It could be asserted that behavior management at Montessori classrooms is formed and arranged within the frame of these three basic factors. This study intends to determine the classroom management practices of Montessori educators who work in public or private preschool institutions’ three-six-year-old early childhood departments in Turkey and how they associate these practices with classroom management. The study was carried out in line with a phenomenological approach, one of the qualitative research methods, and the sample is comprised of 13 Montessori educators working in 4 different institutions located in Istanbul’s Basaksehir, Umraniye, Sancaktepe, and Sariyer districts. The data was obtained through individual face-to-face interviews and a follow-up interview by using the questions prepared by researchers. The findings were obtained by descriptive analysis. Data on the classroom management practices were collected under the theme of management of misbehaviors and 18 practices were identified under this theme. According to findings of the follow-up interview, educators associate the practices they apply for behavior management with classroom management within the frame of the prepared environment, prepared adult, and didactic materials. Future researchers can design studies to compare the practices of Montessori educators and educators working in different approaches towards misbehaviours.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori education gathers around two purposes: biological and social purposes. Helping natural development of an individual is targeted in the biological part, and preparation of an individual for the environment is targeted in the social part (Montessori, 1947). Fundamental element of Montessori approach is to form the space. Although there are plenty of studies present in the literature on this subject, it was noted that studies on interior spaces, with which people have quite intensive and higher level of relationship, turned out to be very few. Thus, in this study, in the context of findings determined by conceptual components affecting physical characteristics in the formation of interior spaces, particularly in kindergartens applying Montessori education model, which has become widespread in preschool educational institutions in Turkey during the past ten years; For this reason five (all) institutions in Ankara were selected as the area of study with more than one data collection technique, and survey with quantitative approach, and document investigation with qualitative approach and monitoring (mechanical) techniques were used. In the applied study, characteristics making up the interior space in preschool educational institutions were studied in the content of the titles of Properties of Interiors, General Spatial Standards of Day Care Centre, Atmospheric Properties Floor, Wall, Furnishings etc...), Furniture and Equipment, and the sample interior- space forming model for design setting was suggested.
