An Historical Analysis of the Role of Magnet Schools in the Desegregation of Riverview School District

Available from: University of Illinois - IDEALS

Abstract/Notes: This historical study provides a concise history of desegregation in public schools in the United States and the subsequent establishment of magnet schools. An historical timeline from the establishment of the first magnet schools to current magnet schools models of excellence was presented. Equity theory framed this study as educational practitioners continue to strive for equal access to educational programs for all students. This study examined historical, racial, and socio-economic data from a school district in central Illinois that established magnet programs in 1979 to stop White flight. The results of the study included information regarding the historical and political events that led to the establishment of magnet programs. Additional data examined if the magnet programs led to improved integration in the school district and if there were differences between students enrolled in both the magnet classes and the non-magnet classes in terms of race and socio-economic status. The study found that there were many factors which led to the establishment of the magnet programs in Riverview. Additionally, the study found that the magnet programs did not accomplish their initial task, and that there are some significant racial and socio-economic differences between students enrolled in magnet and non-magnet classes. Recommendations for further study were provided.

Montessori method of education - History, New Education Movement

Abstract/Notes: The New Education movement was a remarkable coalition of national reform movements that emerged at the turn of the twentieth century. As a heterogeneous movement that was united only in its opposition to the schooling system at the time, its structure and boundaries in the UK have remained a matter of academic debate. This article implements the previously proposed idea of treating New Education as a social movement and analysing the networks between reformers. A social network analysis of the central 58 reformers suggests that the movement was initially divided into two ideologically separate subgroups, but that from ca. 1905 onwards the reformers were strongly interconnected despite their different interests. Thus, by focusing on the social structure of the movement’s core rather than its educational thought, the article challenges the assumption that the New Education movement was fragmented and characterised by tensions. It also furthers the discussion on the feasibility of social network analysis for studying educational reforms.

An Analysis of a Public School Prekindergarten Montessori Bilingual Program

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of my study was to analyze a public school prekindergarten Montessori bilingual program via the investigation of 2nd grade reading achievement scores on a Spanish and an English norm-referenced test between two groups of students: those who had participated in a prekindergarten Montessori bilingual program and those who had participated in a prekindergarten traditional bilingual program. Additionally, my study investigated the perspective of my own personal experience as a leader, as well as the perspective of two other leaders' perspectives on implementing a prekindergarten Montessori bilingual program. The population included in this study was 450 2nd grade students enrolled in a large urban school district in southeast Texas. The prekindergarten Montessori bilingual students were the experimental group, while the prekindergarten traditional bilingual program composed the control group. To answer the first research question, two administrators were interviewed. I, as the researcher, described my perspective as a leader regarding the implementation of a prekindergarten Montessori bilingual program, as well as responses from other school leaders. To answer the second research question, a random sample of 200 students was selected from the population of 450 students who had taken the Aprenda and ITBS tests for 2nd grade and were enrolled during the 2000-2001 school year. For research question one the following themes emerged from this study: (a) program implementation, (b) Montessori training, (c) learning environment, (d) curriculum expectations, and (e) sustaining the Montessori program. For research question two, in Spanish reading the results of the independent t-test indicated that the children who had participated in the Montessori bilingual program significantly outscored the children in a traditional bilingual prekindergarten program on the Spanish reading subtest of the Aprenda. In English Reading, the results of the independent t-test indicated that the children who had participated in a Montessori bilingual program and who had continued through 2nd grade in a transitional bilingual program significantly outscored the children in a traditional bilingual prekindergarten program and who had continued through second grade in an English as a second language program on the English reading subtest of the ITBS.

A Theological Analysis of the Educational Method of Maria Montessori Using an Inverse Consistency Protocol

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: The Montessori approach to education has been embraced by a wide variety of educators around the world. Ironically, though, as secular educators have accepted Maria Montessori’s pedagogical methods, little research has been conducted by Christians especially in relation to the driving force of her approach: the intrinsic spirituality of children. Through the consideration of Montessori’s primary source writings, the aim of this thesis is to summarize this often-neglected component of children’s spirituality in Montessori’s own words. In so doing, the spiritual nature of the Montessori method is articulated and compared to an orthodox Christian view of children’s spirituality. The researcher examines Montessori’s educational perspective with specific attention to her view of the child, environment, and teacher as well as her Catholic Christian foundations. Utilizing the Inverse Consistency Protocol, the researcher provides a theological analysis of the Montessori method to determine what is congruent/incongruent with the Christian faith and identify what is potentially useful in Christian contexts. The hope is to provide Montessori-curious evangelical Christians some insights into the spiritual nature of this educational phenomenon. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction and background of the Montessori method. In chapter 2, the researcher attempts to articulate Montessori’s key principles and assertions from her published works (books, articles, and lectures), giving special attention to how her Catholic faith influenced her view of the spiritual nature of children. Chapter 3 interacts with past Christian sources that have sought to provide analyses of what Montessori said in her writings. Some of these include individuals such as Sofia Cavalletti, Gianna Gobbi, Jerome Berryman, Sonja Stewart, Catherine Stonehouse, and Scottie May. Chapter 4 builds upon the prior two chapters by employing the Inverse Consistency Protocol as a method to analyze and evaluate the final iteration of Montessori’s writings from an orthodox, Christian perspective. Lastly, chapter 5 concludes this study by considering implications for Christian educators and suggests potential avenues for further study.

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Lived Experiences of Graduate-Level Peace Educators: Voices for Sustained Peace

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: Peace education is arguably one of the underappreciated areas of study within the social sciences. Many lifelong, dedicated peace education professionals often feel undervalued by the military-industrial complex apparatus. Influential individuals and corporations that thrive in chaotic and conflicting environments every so often underestimate the relevance of peace educators. Educators find among academic and professional students an intensified urgency to learn the skills necessary to address real-world conflict; however, these courageous individuals are seemingly battling powerful forces with wealth and power. Although such happenings can be demoralizing, it is slowly galvanizing dedicated peace educators to evolve by altering their skill sets, remaining resilient, and growing from the ongoing challenges. In this dissertation, I sought to investigate the lived experiences of peace educators and explore, through their voices, the challenges they face as global conflicts spiral out of control. This study aims to share the peace educators’ voices first-hand. From the findings, the study unveils some of the invisible structural and systemic issues that often undermine peace educators’ efforts. Participants’ storylines showed that the job is interdisciplinary, transformative, and holistic. Bringing forth the narratives and interpreting their stories were pivotal in unearthing peace educators’ involvement in designing programs, developing conflict management strategies, and deepening their understanding of educational policies.

Abstract/Notes: This study investigated the use of directives by three bilingual Korean American children and their families in central New Jersey in the contexts of home and school. Directives are a crucial part of language socialization in the home (Bhimji, 2002; Blum-Kulka, 1997; Kent, 2012) and they are a critical part of the teacher’s repertoire in the classroom since directives aid teachers in the daily task of instructing the learning processes of students (Waring & Hruska, 2012). While directives play an important role in the language socialization practices of children in the home and school, there is little research on how directives are used by bilingual children in both settings of home and school. The study addressed this gap in research by examining the directive repertoires of three bilingual Korean American children and their families in their homes and by analyzing how the children’s directive repertoires intersected with the use of directives in their preschool classroom. The study consisted of an eight-month ethnography of three Korean American children and their families. The participants included three Korean American children, their parents, siblings, and teachers in their preschool class. The children were recruited from a preschool class in which the researcher had previously volunteered. The data was collected through field observations in the three homes and preschool class, interviews of children, parents, and teachers, and a collection of material artifacts in order to capture the use of directives of participants. All observations were audio-and video-recorded. The study contributed to an increased understanding of the bilingualism and biculturalism of Korean American children with a focus on their use of directives. It also shed light on the educational experiences and challenges of bilingual Korean American children in a monolingual preschool class. The study has implications for families and teachers of young bilingual children and learners of English in preschool.
