Abstract/Notes: The growth of the preschool education movement has been a result of the growing recognition of the needs of young children, the need to be provided with a rich and wholesome environment which is conducive to, and promotes the all round development of the child. Prior to 1947, very little attention was paid to preschool education in our country, even by the Government, and preschool was not considered a state responsibility. The Central Advisory Board of Education on Post-War Educational Development (1944) was the first body to recognise the need for preschool education. The report of the Committee emphasised its significance and recommended that an adequate provision of pre-primary education should be an essential adjunct of a National System of Education. The development of preschool education, during the pre-independence period, was rather slow in the country as a whole, but due to the influence of a number of workers inspired by the work of Madam Montessori, pioneering work in the field was undertaken in the state of Gujarat.

Listening to Young Learners: Applying the Montessori Method to English as an Additional Language (EAL) Education

Abstract/Notes: With the current immigration and migration trends in Europe and worldwide, English as an Additional Language (EAL) education is becoming a prominent area of educational research. The discourse around EAL and social justice education has, until now, largely focused on primary, secondary, and post compulsory aged students. Preschool aged EAL children have been left out of the academic discourse. Pedagogical approaches need to be explored to marry EAL and social justice for preschool children. Maria Montessori’s pedagogical approach may be able to achieve this unity without compromising the language development that is desired. The following study is a piece of action research, applying the Montessori Method to a group of nine EAL children in the Canton of Zürich, Switzerland. The data gathered suggests that applying Montessori’s approach to EAL education, that of listening to the child and being attentive to hisher needs, gives autonomy to the student, and can promote social justice in preschool EAL education. Listening to the child occurs through ‘observation’ (attentiveness to the child), critical reflection of practice, and experimentation in education. In this way each child receives a customized education that has, at its foundation, respect for the child. Using ‘observation,’ field notes, and researcher reflections, it became apparent that young children are able to communicate their educational needs. TESOL outcomes were used to monitor the rate at which English was learned. Each language journey was vastly different, but regardless of the initial outcomes met, all children demonstrated increases in their comprehension and spoken English. Abstract/Notes: Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education is a famous accrediting institution in the field of teacher education which bases its activities on evaluating preschool teacher education mainly. Also it’s the only accrediting institution in America for accrediting Montessori teacher education unit and Montessori teacher education programs. Its accreditation is not only recognized in America, but also, as an international accrediting institution for preschool teacher and Montessori teacher, has significant influence on preschool teacher education all over the world. The standards and procedure of MACTE are positive factors to normalize the process and improve the quality of preschool teacher education. MACTE’s experience tells us that the quality of preschool teacher education can not be improved without setting clear goals and effective means. We should carry out in-depth research on preschool teacher standard to build a hierarchical preschool teacher education system which focus on the assessment of all kinds of preschool teacher’s level. So we could truly establish the teacher education quality assurance system in preschool.
