Abstract/Notes: India is one of the few countries with a century-long uninterrupted Montessori tradition, strengthened by Maria Montessori’s long stay there in the 1940s. The chapter traces the evolution of Indian Montessori in three phases: an ascendant first wave from 1915-1947, in which Montessori’s approach was aligned with the Indian independence movement; second, gradual growth between 1947 to 1989 as the method spread slowly in private schools, although some adapted Montessori programming expanded widely through rural government-funded preschools; and third, as India’s expanding middle class since 1989 has fueled private Montessori growth alongside public-private partnerships in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kerala that have increased the access of poor children to high-fidelity Montessori.
