Abstract/Notes: This article constitutes a summarized narrative of the historical-educational context in the development of teaching-learning strategies with the use of computational technology. We selected some thinkers and traced a timeline, which began, in Part 1, with Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Avicenna, René Descartes, Francis Bacon, John Locke, David Hume and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In this second part we describe the theories that were directly influenced by the thinkers described above. We begin with Immanuel Kant, exponent of the late modern age. In contemporary education, we started Maria Montessori and her Golden Material; going to Jean Piaget, the great name of constructivism; Lev Vygotsky, founder of social-interactionism; and Paulo Freire with liberating education. And finally, the theories of Seymour Papert, a pioneer in the study of information and communication technology as a teaching tool.

Abstract/Notes: This chapter recounts the 100-year history of the Montessori movement in the United States and the role of Montessori within the contemporary American education landscape. We explore the origins of Montessori education in the US in the early 1900s, the mid-century revival of Montessori in private schools, and the growth of Montessori programs in public schools in conjunction with the school desegregation and charter school movements. We also situate Montessori education within a national context, including teacher education, education research, and questions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. We conclude with considerations for the future of the Montessori movement in the United States.

Abstract/Notes: There are currently Montessori schools in 33 African countries, primarily in early childhood education. This brief overview examines the diversity of Montessori practice throughout the African sub-continent, from the 1920s to today including private, philanthropic and government-funded efforts, as a racist, colonial project as well as part of efforts to decolonize education, to make it culturally responsive and empower communities, particularly in African rural areas. There are elite, private Montessori schools around Africa and Montessori practitioners have also developed innovative, affordable models for expanding Montessori, including sponsoring training and creating materials locally. In addition, they have demonstrated how key Montessori components can be aligned with aspects of African culture, including respecting the child, building independence, and cultivating peace, community, and a connection with nature. The chapter concludes with brief case studies of contemporary Montessori practice in South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco.

Abstract/Notes: This chapter provides an overview of Montessori education in Latin America, organized around three “waves” of interest in the method of Montessori in the region, seemingly linked to economic and political factors. These are: (1) the early emergence of Montessori across Latin America led by government policy makers and social reformers from the 1910s through the 1930s; (2) a second wave of Montessori from the 1950s to the 1970s, often introduced by foreign volunteers; and (3) the contemporary context of Montessori (from the 1980s onward), largely connected to private preschools, localized community undertakings, or charity and religious schools, particularly in rural areas. Alongside these thematic profiles, the chapter briefly highlights the development of Montessori in a few national contexts: Chile, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama.
