Preschool Reading Instruction: A Literature Search, Evaluation, and Interpretation. Final Report [volume 3 of 3]

Abstract/Notes: This report answers questions that parents are likely to ask about preschool reading instruction. It discusses the origins, curriculum change, new concepts of intelligence and the various teaching methods such as Montessori and the British Infant School. Unlike previous generations, today's child is exposed to visual and auditory stimulation, and to forces converging simultaneously on the preschool curriculum. Events in technology, social and political changes, have exerted tremendous influence on revamping preschool educational programs. A checklist to determine whether or not the home provides for the development of early reading is offered, along with a Selected Book List for children of various ages. The need for emotional development and language skills is reviewed, good experiential backgrounds on which to base language, and an interest in reading. Although the learning of reading is highly individualized, it appears that preschool children can learn to read earlier. The parent is warned, however, that worry about a child's inability to learn to read may handicap a child, and in that case instruction is best left to the school. Trust, encouragement and interest are suggested. (For related documents, see PS 005 928 - 929.) (RG)

Doctoral Dissertation

American Writings on Maria Montessori: An Inquiry into Changes in the Reception and Interpretations Given to Writings on Maria Montessori and Montessori Educational Ideas 1910-1915 and 1958-1970

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this dissertation will be to survey and analyze American writings on Maria Montessori and her educational system, in order to show how the idea of Montessori education has interacted with some changing American ideas and social forces. These changes in social and intellectual currents can be likened to a shift from centrifugal to centripetal force; or to the expansion and then the contraction of a universe. The central metaphor is the same. It is applicable to, and illustrative of, much about the changing social and educational scene in America. The writings on Montessori, examined against this framework, should provide a new view on certain changes in American educational thinking.

Abstract/Notes: Article presents a theoretical analysis of Montessori’s concept of education for cognitive and socio-emotional autonomy. The main aim is prove a unique contemporary validity of theoretical and methodological aspects of this educational philosophy. First, the cycle of self-discipline development, as observed by Maria Montessori, has been described with reference to different forms of pedagogical actions, helping children to transform from perceiving classroom rules of behavior as external to self-direction, deeply grounded in internal needs for autonomy and selfrealization. Then, deep analogies between Montessori pedagogy and contemporary theories of self-regulation by B. Zimmerman has been shown. As a summary, “Decalogue of Montessori Teacher” has been reminded, as a set of rules for everyday educational work based on the principle of “desired non-interference”.
