Abstract/Notes: David McNees' deep foray into creativity theory and drama begins with mindfulness as a preparation for adolescent focus. This article discusses role incarnation, the correlation of the three-period lesson to Landy's role theory, the creation and re-creation of personal story and identity, archetypal heroes, and how the adaptability learned in theater builds both academic and creative success. The practice of role fluidity brings theater theory to ordinary, everyday life as theater can serve as an active support to emphasize the adolescents psychological characteristics in a Montessori context.

Abstract/Notes: John McNamara shares his wisdom and humbly credits Camillo Grazzini, Jenny Höglund, and David Kahn for his growth in Montessori. Recognizing more than what he has learned from his mentors, he shares the lessons he has learned from his students themselves. Math, science, history, and language are so integrated in the curriculum that students comment they don't even think whether they are doing science or math. A schedule that allows time for students to follow a query to a conclusion is vital to the kinds of discoveries John's students make, such as a shortcut for multiplying binomials or reconfiguring cubing materials that made even John marvel at student independence and innovation. A bibliography is included. Abstract/Notes: Asserts that adolescents within Montessori environments continue to use creative imagination to develop the self and still need concrete materials and manipulative tasks. Maintains that a degree of independence must be allowed for adolescents to form the foundation for self- discipline. Discusses the importance of mastering a few areas in depth rather than many areas superficially. (Author/KB)

Abstract/Notes: A theory paper that gives a universal portrait of the "noble adolescent" directly quotes from Montessori. Pat Ludick defines the adolescent as they search for their future roles in a changing world, seek a happy life, form a compatible and collaborative personality, learn humility, and become aware of the head-heart duality. The teacher's role in the prepared adolescent environment is to bring out a stunning list of virtues. The Montessori educational syllabus shows how academic expectations are rooted in the character development that matures with meaningful socially oriented work, self-expression, and referencing to inner virtues. The more we see, the more bedazzling the adolescent's moral and spiritual development will appear. Abstract/Notes: Delineates the mismatch between adolescent needs and school contexts, pointing out necessity for more hand-and- head work for better integration of abstract and concrete processes, sensory richness, and a variety of engagement opportunities. Suggests that schools move beyond the usual precollegiate over-emphasis on higher reasoning skills, maintaining that Maria Montessori's ideas continue to offer insights for creating optimal school environments.
