Assessing Parenting Education: Parenting Styles of Adolescents in Rural and Urban Society

Abstract/Notes: The objective of this study is to find out the differences of parenting styles in rural and urban society toward with adolescent’s involvement in family decision making. This research using a cross sectional survey method and embracing the theories of Montessori, Steinberg and Santrock about adolescent development, and Yusuf in parenting styles. The instrument used was adapted from the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire. It was consisted of 13 questions they were independency, responsibility, honesty, self-acceptance, receiving mistakes, trust, protection, freedom, involvement, and discipline. The result of rural society was the highest maximum value on the acceptance question (59%), namely admitting mistakes. For urban society data showed that the highest score of the questionnaire is about the parenting style of acceptance with a value of 62%. This meant that the result of the parenting style the child receives was the permissiveness style of care. The conclusion based on the area the urban society is more democratic in parenting. It makes teenagers more independent, confident and open minded

Abstract/Notes: This paper highlights the differences and similarities between a Kindergarten outside Bremen in Lower Saxony, Germany and a Primary School Junior Infant Class in County Cork, Republic of Ireland. Both are concerned with the education of the young child but whereas the Kindergarten is attended by three to six year olds, the Junior Infant Class caters almost exclusively for four to five year old children. A case study account of both groups is given and an analysis of the activities which took place in each using the ‘Target Child Observational Schedule’ [Sylva et al., (1980)] is presented in bar‐graph form. The paper concludes that Erzieherinnen, Kinderpflegerinnen and Junior Infant Class teachers need to engage in more interaction with the children in order, in particular, to raise the frequency and quality of linguistic interaction. An increase in the structure of the children's play would help to enhance cognitive development. [Cet article souligne les differences et les similitudes entre un Jardin d'Enfants en Basse Saxonie, près de Brème (Allemagne) et une classe maternelle dans le comtè de Cork (République d'Irlande). Les deux établissements sont charges de l'éducation de jeunes enfants, mais tandis que les élèves du Jardin d'Enfants sont ages d'entre trois et six ans, la classe de maternelle ne s ‘occupe pratiquement exclusivement que d'enfants de quatre a six ans. On donnera un compte‐rendu de l'étude de cas faite sur les deux groupes, ainsi qu'une presentation sous forme de graphique en barres de l'analyse des activites proposées de part et d'autre, basée sur le Programme d'observation cible de l'enfant du Professeur Kathy Sylva (1980). En conclusion, nous avancerons que les Erzieherinnen, les Kinderpflegerin et les enseignants de la classe maternelle doiventfaire preuve de davantage d'interaction avec les enfants afin, en particulier, d'élever le niveau auquel de tels enfants parlent. Une structuration accrue des activites ludiques des enfants aurait également pour résultat un développement cognitif plus rapide. / Este ensayo trata de las diferencias y semejanzas entre un prescolar en la baja Sajonia, en las afueras de Bremen, Alemania, y una Clase Junior Infantil en la Escuela Primaria del Condado de Cork, en la República de Irlanda. Los dos sistemas se ocupan de la education de niños en la primera infancia pero, mientras que el prescolar se ocupa de niños entre las edades de tres y seis años, la Clase Junior Infantil se dedica casi exclusivamente a los niños de cuatro a cinco anos de edad. Este papel describe un caso particular de cada uno de estos dos grupos asi como de las actividades que tuvieron lugar en cada uno de ellos, utilizando Target Child Observational Schedule (1980) de Kathy Sylva, y que se presentan a manera de gráfica de barras. Es estudio llega a la conclusion de que los educadores de Erzieherinnen, Kinderpflegerin y de las Clases Infantiles Junior necesitan aumentar la interactión con el niho para elevar, especialmente, el nivel en el que estos nihos hablan. Un incremento en la estuctura del juego de los nihos también resultaria en la mejora del desarrollo cognitivo.]

Abstract/Notes: In this contribution, the aim is to juxtapose three figures who, in spite of their very different skills, were interested in the element of colour. The first is Corrado Ricci, an illustrious art critic and historian, who started to study children’s drawings at the end of the 1800s, making him one of the first in Italy to do so. In 1877, he published a small pamphlet called L'arte dei bambini (The art of children), which included a special reflection about the theme of colour. Conversely, the other two authors are pedagogists: Maria Montessori (1870–1952), an internationally renowned figure who also dealt with the theme of colour through her method, equipment and tools, and Giuseppina Pizzigoni (1870–1947), a pedagogist who dedicated positivist attention to the theme of colour, which she linked to natural aspects and a connection to the vegetable garden, a cornerstone of her method. At the end of this historical overview, a survey that was conducted by the Istituto Comprensivo Rinnovata Pizzigoni is presented, in an attempt to observe the colour-related proposals that have been made.

Abstract/Notes: In order to investigate the effectiveness of Montessori preschool education as compared with non-Montessori preschool education, Phase I of this study matched 2 groups, each of 21 preschool children, on intelligence quotient and certain socio-economic factors. One group attended a Montessori preschool and the other a non-Montessori preschool. The children were administered tests near the beginning and end of the preschool year to determine any differences in achievement due to the preschool training. In Phase II a trained researcher interviewed the primary grade teachers who by then had some of the preschool children of Phase I in their classrooms. Ratings of these teachers provided information on the personality and ability of 3 groups of children, (1) former Montessori preschool children, (2) former non-Montessori preschool children, and (3) non-preschool children. The children were rated on 8 major traits which contained 27 stimulus variables. Phase I data indicated that Montessori preschool children gained significantly more in verbal ability than non-Montessori preschool children. Phase II data indicated that Montessori children were superior to the children of the other 2 groups in reading readiness, interest in learning, independence, interpersonal relations, leadership, and learning ability. No differences were found in creativity or ability to adjust to the traditional-type school.
