Abstract/Notes: An important part of a child’s development is learning how to relate to other children appropriately (Sidorowicz & Hair, 2009). The purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching children about peace would help them to reduce or resolve conflicts in the classroom. The study took place in a suburban Montessori classroom of 26 children, ages three to six years. The Research Methodology section of this Action Research report details the peace lessons and materials used in the peace curriculum. The data collection included observations of children’s conflicts and resolutions, conferences with the children and teachers, and children’s journal writings. The results of the study determined that, as the peace curriculum was implemented, there was a clear reduction in the number of daily conflicts among the children. Also, children involved in conflicts shifted from requiring a lot of teacher involvement to resolve their conflicts to needing little or no teacher involvement in the resolution. Suggested further research includes expanding the peace curriculum lessons over the entire year. In addition, further lessons and work could be added.

Abstract/Notes: In 1968, Clifton Hills Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, adopted the "Supermarket Idea of Learning." This learning theory provided for setting up a learning center in each instructional area with materials and machines of instruction accessible to all students. Additional features to implement the theory included; a) a daily teacher planning period, b) teaching teams, c) elimination of grade level expectation, d) individualization of instruction, e) multi-age and multi-grade grouping, f) large and small group instruction, g) independent study, and h) opportunities for student tutorials. The California Achievement Test was administered to the students every October for several years; it was possible to compare the test scores for fifth grade children in 1967 before the program was implemented with the test scores for fifth grade children in 1971 three years after the program was initiated. The direction and degree of change of mean CAT scores for the 60 children were

Cooperative Activities to Reduce Aggression in Young Children

Abstract/Notes: I investigated the effect of introducing cooperative games during recess to reduce aggressive behaviors in preschool-age children. The action research was done at an intentionally culturally and socio-economically diverse Montessori school in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 23 children involved were all children from the three to six age group who take daily naps. I recorded every aggressive incident I saw before, during, and after the intervention. I also recorded what cooperative activities I introduced for the intervention. Once before and after the intervention I asked the children if they enjoyed recess. I recorded observational notes such as weather conditions, and what activities the children chose each day. The data did not show that the cooperative games had a significant effect on the number of aggressive incidents recorded. Many more boys than girls were involved in aggressive incidents. There was no significant change in how the children reported their enjoyment of recess. Aggressive behavior could possibly be reduced through another action research project with a longer intervention period, a conflict resolution plan, and more purposeful activities for the children outside.
