Abstract/Notes: In 2020, Montessori was present in 9 of the ten UN-classified Eastern European countries: Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine. Despite the tremendous differences across these countries and their Montessori systems, Montessori in Eastern Europe is marked by enthusiastic development in the early 20th century that was halted under communist rule and has re-emerged post 1989. In some countries like Moldova, Bulgaria or Belarus, the number of Montessori schools number in the tens but in others, like Poland, Czech Republic, and Russia, there are more than a hundred schools. Organizationally, Montessori efforts across Eastern Europe are diverse and grassroots, popularizing the Montessori approach and developing local communities of practitioners. Across Eastern Europe, three major types of Montessori schools can be observed: private schools, schools funded by NGOs and a small number of state-funded programs.
