Our Best Advice: The Multiage Problem Solving Handbook, K-8

Available from: ERIC

Abstract/Notes: A multiyear, multiage experience, combined with what is known about collaborative learning, learning styles, and multiple intelligences, grouping practices, and the success of inclusion in such a setting, promises to give all children a real opportunity for success in the classroom. Many schools have implemented multiage programs successfully, but other programs have been rushed into without proper planning and with requirements that conflict with the spirit of multiage practices. This book shows the potential pitfalls of implementing and conducting a multiage program, and tells how to avoid them. It discusses planning, staff development, student selection, parental involvement, inclusion, specialists in the multiage classroom, and many other issues that, handled properly, will make a multiage program a success. The book is a response to concerns expressed by teachers and offers advice to those educators faced with creating a new multiage program, and to those already in a program

The Multiage Handbook: A Comprehensive Resource for Multiage Practices

Abstract/Notes: Studies have criticized age-graded schools as creating a barrier to meeting the goals of equity and instructional excellence in schools. This handbook provides research on multiage classroom practices and argues that a multiage system better addresses and meets students' needs. Information is presented on the following topics: educational reform, parental education, cooperation in implementation, class size, multiyear teaching, grouping for purpose, time challenges, thematic planning, multiple intelligences, music in the multiage classroom, physical education in the multiage classroom, art in the multiage classroom, student-directed learning, assessment, and several case studies of working multiage classrooms. A large section of the handbook contains profiles from 13 working multiage classroom schools. Sample information from these schools includes report cards, assessment tools, curriculum outlines, sample letters to parents, grant requests, and bibliographies. A glossary of

The Multiage Evaluation Book

Abstract/Notes: Multiage is an instructional design whereby students from two or more grades are blended together into a learning community that progresses with the same teacher(s) for two or more years. This book was designed to help teachers and administrators explore, implement, and evaluate their multiage program. The book is presented in four parts. The first three parts share a consistent format and include a series of checklists and charts for participating educators to complete. Part 1, "Exploring the Multiage Classroom," examines the multiage classroom, reasons for its implementation, and the kinds of instructional practices commonly associated with it. Part 2, "Implementing the Multiage Classroom," presents the steps involved in planning the instructional design associated with a multiage classroom. Part 3, "Evaluating the Multiage Classroom," provides assistance in establishing an evaluation process for the multiage instructional design, clarifying the elements to be evaluated and how
