Abstract/Notes: Thesis description: The subject of our thesis is Montessori pedagogy in day care. In our bachelor’s thesis we deal with early childhood education in general and present the main ideas of the Montessori method. We also compare day care centers that go by the principales of the montessori pedagogy with conventional day care centers. Theoretical summary: The Montessori method is one form of alternative pedagogy. The main question of our bachelor’s thesis is: What special features does the Montessori method bring to the activities in Montessori day care centers? In addition we will examine how the idea of the child being in the center of the day care shows in the activities of the day care center. Methodological summary: The research material has been collected with the theme interwiev method and the material has been analysied using the content analysis method. We have interwieved the employees of some Montessori day care centers. Main results: The most significant special features of the Montessori method in early childhood education are the emphasizing of individuality, the child being in the center and the partnership of the parents and the day care center. Also the role of the kndergarten teacher and the environment are different. Play has a different kind of role and there are children of different ages in the group. Conclusions: The greatest strenghts of the Montessori method are individuality, the holistic wiew of development and the child-centred approach of The Montessori method will support the beneficial development of the child’s self-esteem. Key words: Early childhood education, the Montessori method, day care / Opinnäytetyön kuvaus: Opinnäytetyömme aihe on montessoripedagogiikka varhaiskasvatuksessa. Käsittelemme työssämme varhaiskasvatusta yleisesti ja esittelemme montessoripedagogiikan pääpiirteissään. Vertailemme myös montessoripedagogiikkaa toteuttavia päiväkoteja tavallisiin päiväkoteihin. Teoreettinen ja käsitteellinen esittely: Montessoripedagogiikka on yksi vaihtoehtoisten pedagogioiden malleista. Päätutkimuskysymyksemme on mitä erityistä montessoripedagogiikka tuo montessoripäiväkotien toimintaan. Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s works discussed in this chapter are, Education for a New World (1946), To Educate the Human Potential (1948), and The Formation of Man (1955). Like many of her texts, these publications are based on transcriptions of lectures held in various settings including teacher training courses. These three books were written during and after the tragic disruptions caused by WWII and were published first in India. They are among Montessori's last texts in which she highlights cosmic education and expresses her conviction of the need for a global reconstruction that must necessarily begin with childhood.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s work discussed in the chapter, The Child, Society and The World – Unpublished Speeches and Writings, is based on her original speeches between 1930 and 1950. The writings cover a wide range of topics organized into six sections. Two sections speak directly to parents and teachers, urging them to respect children’s interests and occupations which allows them to build concentration and develop self-discipline. Another section considers diverse topics including social education, religious education, fantasy and fairy tales, and Montessori’s lesson on silence. The last section of the chapter outlines Montessori’s ultimate pedagogical aim: a new and better world achieved through the child based on what Montessori describes as cosmic education.

Montessori Education in a Plurilingual World

Book Title: The Bloomsbury Handbook of Montessori Education

Pages: 489-501

Abstract/Notes: In recent years, education scholars and practitioners have increasingly turned their attention to the benefits of applying plurilingual approaches, that is, approaches that draw on the full linguistic repertoires of both students and teachers—all the languages and dialects they use in all the ways they use them—to enhance learning outcomes. In Montessori education, the contribution of multiple languages and cultures is so commonplace that little attention has been paid to this distinctive feature. This chapter explores how a pluricultural worldview and the use of multiple languages impacts the ways children and teachers experience Montessori education. The chapter concludes with recommendations for research that investigates manifestations of plurilingualism in Montessori learning environments around the world, and how such a research trajectory might benefit not only Montessori education, but the education community more widely.

Abstract/Notes: This article probes the vicissitudes of racism and how the multicultural perspectives of a Montessori preschool environment can prevent prejudices. Barbara Hacker is whole-heartedly committed to human unity transcending color differences. Racism is incompatible with a Montessori classroom that shares different holidays and cultures, builds social cohesion, and creates a safe and tolerant place.
