Evaluation of Early Childhood Education: A Model Cities-Supported Preschool Program

Abstract/Notes: A Head Start Program operating in Kansas City since 1965 was viewed as inadequate because enrollment was limited to about 600 children per year. The Model Cities Agency determined to provide a program for the remainder of the children in the Model Cities neighborhoods. The programs developed were differentiated administratively for the purposes of this evaluation and the program considered a single entity and referred to as Early Childhood Education. These questions were developed as evaluation goals: What specific educational approaches were provided?; To what degree do the children grow to the stated objectives?; Do these programs meet the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual needs of the program's four-year-old children?; Do these children grow differentially?; Are specified goals reached as anticipated by staff?; What program differences account for student growth differences?; Do parents in the parent education component change relevant to their children's development?; Are these programs complementary with kindergarten programs of urban schools?; What are the effects of staff development activities?; Is program administration effective?; Are children with special problems provided assistance in achievement of program objectives?; And what program changes should be made? Each question is treated in succession and is detailed. Summaries giving the main thrust are provided after each section. (RC)

Abstract/Notes: In 2002, the Ministry of Education in New Zealand released Pathways to the Future: Nga Huarahi Arataki. This 10year strategic plan for early childhood education was the culmination of years of advocacy, research and consultation within the early childhood sector. A key component of the plan is a staged requirement for teachers in early childhood centres to have a Diploma of Teaching ECE or equivalent qualification. The study analyses the impact on the Montessori early childhood sector of the requirement that teachers in a centre be qualified with a Diploma or equivalent. This thesis draws on the results of a qualitative study involving interviews with key policy informants and focus groups of teachers and the story that emerges describes the complexities, frustrations and positive outcomes for centres and their teachers. The story points to a need for support, intervention and creative strategies to ensure no part of the early childhood sector is left behind, and diversity within early childhood education in New Zealand is maintained. The final outcome of the study raises the dilemma faced by the Montessori community; how can the approach accommodate the current ideas of early childhood education brought to centres through the policy requirement and remain identifiably Montessori?

Abstract/Notes: Ten selected emerging trends in the field of early childhood education are discussed in this conference address: (1) a reevaluation of the view that early childhood education is a panacea; (2) greater emphasis on planned continuity between kindergartens and the primary grades; (3) increased use of multi-age grouping; (4) need for parenthood education in the high school; (5) importance of parent involvement in the decision making and policy formation processes concerning the education of his child and the implementation of classroom programs; (6) wider acceptance of the structured or prepared environment in programs; (7) development of a quality day care environment based on careful research and evaluation, (8) importance of humanistic or affective education; (9) need for aesthetic education (music, dance, literature, dramatics) in the total education of the child; and (10) accountability of teachers to the consumer as well as to the school boards. Abstract/Notes: This study explores the role of Montessori pedagogy for early childhood pupils in Saudi Arabian. In order to fulfil this aim, this study collected data from a sample of 12 teachers in different five schools in order to explore their attitudes towards the adoption of Montessori pedagogy in early childhood schools. Two types of data collection methods (i.e. interviews and questionnaire) were used in this study. The numeric data collected from the questionnaire was analysed statistically and the textual data collected from interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that teachers believe that using Montessori Pedagogy can help students in early childhood as it enhances their learning quality and performance. Furthermore, using Montessori pedagogy is preferable among teachers of younger ages. However, an efficient adoption of Montessori pedagogy requires sufficient experience from the teachers in using this pedagogy. Other factors that influence the attitudes of teachers towards using Montessori pedagogy include availability of specialist support and the existence of training courses for teachers. In regard to limitations, the results of this study cannot be generalized to the whole population due to the small size of sample adopted in this research.

Role of Physical Instructional Materials in Early Childhood Learning Centres

Abstract/Notes: The primary aim of this research is to assess the existing situation of instructional material in various public and private early childhood development centres of Lekhnath Municipality, Nepal. The sample was selected on the basis of different stratified random sampling comprised of 2 primaries, 2 lower secondary, 4 higher secondary and two fully community managed schools with the total of 27 schools around Lekhnath, whose school grade start with pre education were included of 10 sampled pre-primary schools. Data, observation by researcher, semi-structured questionnaire were obtained from of early childhood education program and formal discussion with parents comprises (N=30+10+10) additional interview data were obtained from 10 sample schools teachers/facilitators 10 head master were included. Direct observation was based on national educational and Montessori guidance were designing and implementing their programs. The study revealed that majority of community managed ECDs have (81.2%) instructional materials available with them; however, there is the increase in enrolment in private primary schools with English medium (7.3%). The enrolments in private ECDs are almost double as compared Governmental funded school in the year 2001-2012. Results indicated that there were inadequate educational materials in early childhood centres in public managed schools (primary, secondary and high) and low community participation in materials management. There has been little focus on the quality of early school management of learning materials. To improve program quality, more facilities, more time, and institutional recognition of their program’s value, financial support, and professional development opportunities were compulsory full-day play with learning, day snacks, government and local community should provide the more funds to manage child friendly pre-kindergarten can only meet holistic management of early child of Nepal.
