Abstract/Notes: New knowledge and skills acquired through the synergy of individuality and diversity will lead the society and culture in the 21st century. Contrasted with the isolation and exclusiveness in the 20thcentury, the synergy of individuality and diversity will be made through the mutual understanding and respect among people. In early childhood, children are beginning learners in their society, immature in body and mentality. They require social learning skills that will embrace the diversities within their culture. Korea is divided into South and North for over 60 years. As South Korea embraces the advanced society, understanding the South and North and the national education for the advanced society should be included in the early childhood education curriculum. The great scholars supported the premise that early childhood is the fundamental period for forming the personality and learning the basic knowledge and skills for the present and future. The encouragement of this global trend for individuality and diversity in current Korean early childhood program is in the beginning stages. Mixed racial families are becoming more prevalent in the Korean society. In the education area, the teaching method is just as important as the content. The type of teaching method, whether it is an experience or instructional-based method, depends on the learner and the knowledge trait. The teaching method has to focus on the learner and the characteristic of knowledge.

Benefits and Challenges of Inclusion in an Early Childhood Montessori Classroom
Available from: Westminster College

Abstract/Notes: This study indicates the benefits and challenges of inclusion in an early childhood Montessori classroom. The research has been significant due to limited resources on inclusion linked to Montessori education. This study was done in a private inclusive Montessori school in an early childhood classroom. Through observations, interviews and assessments, the results of inclusion in a Montessori setting were discovered. Meaningful relationships between peers and teachers are critical in the development of the child. The prepared environment is a unique feature of an inclusive Montessori environment that enables children to learn naturally by manipulating materials in the classroom with a hands-on approach. This engages academic success. It was also found that inclusion in a Montessori setting does not work effectively for every child with a disability. To have inclusion work successfully within this classroom environment, three teachers were mandatory: Two certified Montessori teachers and one special educator. This presents a challenge because the majority of schools cannot afford this luxury. Transitions, inconsistency and too much freedom are a challenge with inclusive Montessori education. However, inclusive Montessori education will benefit children in learning acceptance and respect for humanity. Further studies should be done on this topic with larger sample sizes, longer duration of time, various disabilities and different locations.

Abstract/Notes: This article explores the ways Ngaanyatjarra students in Australia respond to Montessori pedagogy in a remote Aboriginal early childhood context. The article initially presents key literature pertaining to early childhood education, Aboriginal education, and Montessori education in Australia. The qualitative methodology underpinning the research is subsequently outlined. The approach emphasized in this research is that of interpretivism. The data analysis process highlighted three headings: concentration and engagement, student autonomy, and student independence. The findings of this research indicate the potential for Montessori pedagogy as a viable alternative practice of education for remote Aboriginal early childhood contexts, as Montessori pedagogy may align more harmoniously with the cultural dispositions of Ngaanyatjarra students. Finally, recommendations are presented in light of the research.
