Abstract/Notes: This action research aimed to evaluate the effects of music and movement on learning sight words. This study occurred in a public Montessori classroom in a metropolitan area in Minnesota. There were 19 students, ages 4-6, and 10 targeted sight words. Students viewed Jan Richardson and Jack Hartmann’s Sight Word Music videos during the 6-week intervention. In each video, students were encouraged to dance, move, sing, and follow the instructions of the musician. Baseline and post-assessment data, student attitude surveys, video observations, and student activity worksheets were collected and evaluated from 10 kindergarten students. Quantitative data revealed increased student proficiency in reading sight words. Qualitative data revealed that student attitude towards music and movement and student engagement does not impact the outcome of words learned. Although there were increases in student proficiency, more research is needed to thoroughly evaluate the effectiveness of Richardson and Hartmann’s Sight Word Music videos.

Montessori gave at musical education an essential function, not just for intellectual development, but for the global education of the child also from the psychic point of view. She at the beginning of the 20th century has traced some of the possible routes of musical education developed by music specialists, artists such as Emile Jacques-Dalcròze, Zoltàn Kodàly, Carl Orff. The Montessori bells remain one of the most brilliant inventions for ear sensory education. It's now universally recognized that Music is an essential element of an education that develops the principles of freedom, autonomy, collaboration, participation, respect, solidarity. Items that are in pacifist thought of Montessori and in the elaboration of a “cosmic plane”, synthesis of her educational philosophy.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this article was to announce the existence of 35 unpublished booklets on Montessorian music education that were conceived by Maria Montessori and authored by her music consultant, Anna Maria Maccheroni, at the beginning of this century. These booklets considerably extend the brief portions devoted to music in Montessori's publications. The joint effort of these two women resulted in a comprehensive program that is distinctive by reason of unique aspects that include (1) collaboration, (2) structure, (3) prepared environments, (4) auto-education, (5) control of error, (6) isolation of the aural sense, and (7) scope. Representative examples of distinctive features and a cursory description of the booklets and their contents are presented.
