Studying Mentors and Mentoring from a Learner-Centered Perspective

Abstract/Notes: Teacher candidates, while completing their student teaching internship, are part of an important teaching-and-learning triad. The other members of the triad, mentor teachers and university field instructors, provide essential support to teacher candidates throughout the student teaching internship experience (Yee, 1968). Recent research has examined the roles of mentor teachers and university field instructors. Not as much is understood, however, about the moments or experiences teacher candidates recognize as when they learned the most about teaching. With retirements increasing and as much as 50% leaving the field within the first five years of teaching (Shwartz & Dori, 2016), there is an urgency in studying, and hopefully improving, novice teacher support systems. In this dissertation, I explore the moments or experiences teacher candidates recognize as insightful and valuable from their student teaching experience, from the perspective of four recent student teachers. Using phenomenology as a method of inquiry (Giorgi, 1985), data were collected through phenomenological interviews of four teacher candidates after they completed a year-long student teaching internship. These interviews tell the story of teacher candidates becoming through learning (Hodkinson et al., 2008). Findings indicate that framing problems of practice within practical situations, situations that likely occur in an elementary classroom, positively influence teacher candidates’ learning. The practice of adaptative mentoring (van Ginkel et al., 2015) provides opportunities for mentor teachers to support teacher candidates as they learn about teaching practice, while also helping them with emotional and practical concerns. Ultimately, I argue that grounding mentoring in both the how and why of teaching, along with adapting to the individual needs of teacher candidates, provides supportive opportunities for teacher candidates’ learning.

[11]. / The main goal of treating dementia patients is to improve their cognitive function and ability of daily living, improve their quality of life [1], and delay disease progression [2], music intervention [3], creative story therapy [4], etc. Montessori method is also a non-drug method suitable for dementia patients [5]. Montessori-Based Intervention The cognitive level of patients, combined with their interests and hobbies [6], can promote the improvement of patients’ abilities and behaviors [7], reduce their agitation, anxiety, restlessness and social function degradation [8-10], and ultimately improve their quality of life [11].

Abstract/Notes: This article discusses how children learn to understand the decimal system in very concrete ways, while having fun using beads. When counting the beads, the children learn 5,491 is not simply "five thousand four hundred and ninety-one" but actually 5 thousands, 4 hundreds, 9 tens, and 1 unit. They begin to understand that as they get 10 units, they can exchange the units for another 10, and as they get 10 tens, they can exchange them for 1 hundred. This article is framed by the following scenario: a child comes home from school to tell her parent she played with beads all day. The parent subsequently, questions the child's teacher, concerned her child needed something more challenging to do than play with beads. This is a common Montessori parent question, and a classic example of the important role perception plays in how one understands things. The author explains a successful technique of responding to the parent's concerns by trying to discern the answers to the following three questions: (1) What activity is this mother describing to me? (2) What are the parent's perceptions of the work? and (3) Is there anything specific the parent is interested in having the child learn? If so, is the child ready to do that?

Abstract/Notes: In the introduction of Montessori Early Child Education to China, deficiencies exist in language course. With rich experience in teaching practice, the author finds that the form and meaning of Chinese characters have a positive influence on the development of Children's mind and language ability. Based on Montessori Early Education Method, an early education toolkit for the teaching of Chinese characters is established, which conforms to the psychology of children's development, pedagogy, and philology. By perceiving and understanding the formation of Chinese character and the relationship of Chinese characters form and meaning, Children would find Chinese characters and the six categories of Chinese characters a touchable, warm and friendly partner.

Abstract/Notes: Erdkinder is a superior way to integrate academic studies with work experience, community action, and economic activity. Erdkinder actualizes Cosmic Education, making its unity, common purpose, interdependency, and cooperation a way of life. Erdkinder principles could help organize the urban Montessori adolescent work, providing a comprehensive framework for classifying and rethinking current Montessori adolescent experiments. (KDFB)
