Parents and Early Childhood Programs: A Historical Analysis

Abstract/Notes: Since early childhood programs were first introduced in the United States in the 1820s, early childhood professionals have been aware that teaching and caring for young children involves establishing relationships with their families. This study is a historical examination of the relationships between early childhood programs and parents. The study considered the political, social, and economic factors that have influenced the development of relationships between parents and early childhood programs, including: infant schools; kindergarten; laboratory schools; nursery schools; Montessori programs; day nurseries and child care; and Head Start. The study showed that the history of parent involvement in early childhood programs is essentially the history of early childhood programs. Since the 1820s, early childhood professionals have provided ample literary evidence of how parents were expected to be involved in early childhood programs, and how these expectations were communicated to them. Literary evidence was the basis for this study. Evidence used in the study included: autobiographies, journals, recollections, and letters of key participants; manuals of early childhood practice; proceedings from meetings and conferences; publications from government agencies; articles and commentaries from professional journals and popular magazines; theoretical and practical works by leaders in the field; research studies; textbooks; and childrearing advice books. The history of early childhood programs reveals a wide range of attempts to bring parents and early childhood programs together. At various times and in various contexts, these attempts have been called parent cooperation, parent education, parent participation, parent involvement, and teacher-parent partnership. Throughout most of the history of early childhood programs, parents were cast in the role of learner. More recently, the ideal relationship between parents and early childhood professionals has been characterized as that of a partnership. The various terms that have been used to describe the relationships between parents and early childhood programs were examined through the course of this study, as were the assumptions and beliefs that have influenced the interpretation of these terms.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to analyse how parents’ decision making process of early childhood education choices in Pakistan is influenced by parental perceptions. The theoretical framework used for this study is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. A qualitative design survey together with one to one interview of 8 parents of children aged 3-5 years enrolled in private and public ECE programs was used to answer four research questions on parents’ decision making for ECE selection. The study revealed that Pakistani parents relied on personal priorities such as socio-economic as well as educational backgrounds, traditional views and expectations which influenced their decision-making process. Even though parents considered information from multiple sources they haphazardly ordered quality indicators without regard for the influence of any quality compromising indicator on their child’s development.

Abstract/Notes: There is very little research about children with Autism in Montessori early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand. This study examined parents’ and teachers’ perspectives of children with Autism attending Montessori early childhood education environments. This thesis documents literature that explores and critiques Montessori philosophy and the teaching of children on the Autism spectrum. The purpose of this study was to gain insights into the Montessori teaching approach in early childhood education, as a supportive environment for children with Autism in the early years. However, I discovered that the Montessori environment is less than ideal if the teachers do not understand Autism Spectrum Disorder and do not make allowances for the symptoms that present themselves. It was my intention to explore the factors that complemented both Montessori and the support of children with Autism with an approach that is conducive to learning and encourages positive behavioural patterns. The findings revealed three main indicators being identified as important. These were social competence, language and communication, and individual interests and sensory implications. However, not all findings were positive. The parents all agreed that the teachers needed to be flexible and understanding in their approach, and many Montessori teachers are strict in their routine and are not prepared to sway from their teaching method to assist a child with Autism. This study suggests that Montessori early childhood teachers would benefit from professional development in the areas of including children with special needs, particularly Autism Spectrum Disorder, particularly in regards to understanding the unique characteristics of children with Autism and how they can effectively use the Montessori philosophy, equipment and prepared environment to support each child’s learning and development. Suggestions for future professional learning for Montessori teachers include the provision of professional development in including children with “special needs”, particularly Autism Spectrum Disorder for Montessori early childhood teachers. It is not only the Montessori philosophy and the prepared environment that supports the child with Autism, but the teacher’s awareness of the child’s needs and a willingness to be flexible in their approach.

Abstract/Notes: This action research paper aimed to identify the benefits of parent informational classes within the Montessori method. Parents participated in three informational sessions. The sessions discussed Montessori philosophy and each of the core areas in the Montessori classroom. Data was measured using pre-and post-surveys, allowing parents to elaborate on their understanding. Parents were also able to provide questions and feedback regarding areas they desired to learn more. Parents expressed that the informative classes provided them a better understanding of the Montessori philosophy and provided ideas for incorporating the method into their homes. The research concluded the importance of involving and educating parents on their child’s method of education. Further research should include a more extensive and more diverse group of parents or involve multiple schools to see the impact on parent involvement and student success. Upon this research, we will prioritize educating parents on the importance of the Montessori philosophy.

Montessori, anak-anak dapat belajar dengan baik dalam lingkungan yang tepat. Maksudnya, lingkungan yang sesuai ukuran, untuk merangsang, dan mempermudah anak untuk mencerna pengetahuan kognitif. Seiring dengan perkembangan metode montessori, metode ini banyak diminati para orangtua. Meskipun begitu, banyak orangtua masih belum paham bagaimana memulai untuk menerapkan metode montessori. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan sebuah media yang dapat dijadikan salah satu preferensi para orangtua untuk memudahkan mereka dalam memulai aktivitas montessori si rumah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan instrumen penelitian seperti studi literatur untuk menggali informasi mengenai konten montessori yang didapat dari beberapa buku serta jurnal yang berkaitan dengan topik penelitian , depth interview kepada ahli montesori untuk menggali info lebih detail mengenai montessori, studi komparator, dan eksplorasi visual, dan juga user testing yang menggunakan instrumen focus group discussion bersama target audien. Seluruh konsep perancangan ini akan dirangkum dalam sebuah buku yang berisi materi mengenai tutorial aktivitas montessori yang disajikan dengan menggunakan elemen-elemen visual berupa ilustrasi tutorial aktivitas montessori pada outputnya. Buku ilustrasi tutorial aktivitas montessori ini nantinya akan digunakan sebagai media alternatif yang dapat memudahkan para orangtua yang memiliki anak usia 2-6 tahun untuk memulai kegiatan montessori di rumah. / Montessori is a parenting method for early childhood developed by Maria Montessori, a female doctor from Italy in 1870. According to dr. Montessori, children can learn well in the right environment. That is, an appropriate size environment, to stimulate, and make it easier for children to digest cognitive knowledge. Over time, this method is in great demand by parents. Even so, many parents still do not understand how to start implementing the Montessori method. Therefore, we need a media that can be used as one of the preferences of parents to make it easier for them to start montessori activities at home. This study uses a qualitative approach, with research instruments such as literature studies to explore information about Montessori content obtained from several books and journals related to the research topic, depth interviews with Montessori experts to explore more detailed information about Montessori, comparative studies, and visual exploration. , as well as user testing using a focus group discussion instrument with the target audience. All of these design concepts will be summarized in a book containing material on Montessori activity tutorials presented using visual elements in the form of illustrations of Montessori activity tutorials on the output. This Montessori activity tutorial illustration book will later be used as an alternative media that can make it easier for parents who have children aged 2-6 years to start Montessori activities at home.

Abstract/Notes: It is only within very recent history – the past 25 to 30 years – that neuroscience has become a force in child development and educational research, as the tools to study the brain in action have improved and become more readily available. Although neuroscience research on reading, math, and social and emotional function also has important implications for education, this chapter focuses on executive function (EF) skills because these skills play an especially foundational role in learning and because they have been particularly well studied. Basic research on EF development has provided an important foundation for interventions designed to specifically target EF skills in young children, and suggests how to structure places of education to playfully explore their environments in intentional and attentive ways, to practice reflection, and to engage in self-regulated learning. Although neuroscience is a relatively new player in early education, it has transformed people's understanding of the conditions that support learning and brain development.

Abstract/Notes: This study examined to what extent Montessori early childhood education programs in one geographical region of the United States could be classified into homogeneous clusters based on teachers’ reported practices associated with Montessori education. Once identified, the characteristics defining each subgroup were described, and factors supporting or hindering the implementation of recommended practices were examined. Of particular interest was whether the teachers were intentionally or inadvertently making changes to the model, and if modifications were being made, whether these were due to situational factors or to viewpoints that differed from Montessori’s perspectives. Teachers’ beliefs about managing and motivating children were also assessed in relation to their interpretation of the Montessori method in order to examine what role, if any these beliefs played in shaping classroom practices.
