Abstract/Notes: Fifty years later, I continue to be involved with AMS, currently as chair of the Archives Committee and a member of the Development Committee, but I've also worn many other hats: AMS Board member, Board president, interim executive director, and Heads of Schools representative to the board. From the beginning (she founded AMS in I960, when she was 33 years old), Nancy's mission was to "Americanize" the educational philosophy created by Dr. Maria Montessori, for our country's Early Childhood programs, including those in public schools. Nancy was a visionary, a gifted speaker, a powerful leader, a persuasive advocate for children and their families-she was one of the founders of Head Start-and a proponent of excellent child care.

Abstract/Notes: Nancy (along with Carole Wolfe Korngold and Virginia Varga) served on the committee that worked to create ACCESS, the first accrediting body for Montessori teacher education, and set standards for Montessori teacher education centers to be accredited by a federal body, thus enabling students to get federal loans and opening Montessori training to increased diversity. Along with Sonnie McFarland, Marge Farmer, and Ruth Selman, Nancy formed the AMS Peace and Social Justice Committee, setting the stage for AMS to continue to have the work of peace remain central to the organization's mission. Nancy presented to overflow crowds at more than a dozen AMS annual conferences, often on what she called "tender topics"- ahead of her time, she offered workshops on topics such as "Death, Divorce, and Disability," "Helping Children Deal with Loss," and "True Selves: Supporting Children and Staff with Gender Identity and Expression."
