Abstract/Notes: "Dr. Maria Montessori, world famous as an educator, and founder of the educational system bearing her name, arrived Monday in New York from Rome. She will proceed soon to the Pacific coast for a series of lectures and lessons in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and preliminary steps are being taken to bring her to Portland for a lecture. Miss Gertrude Talbot, who attended Mme. Montessori's school in Rome and is one of her most ardent followers and successful teachers, is interesting herself in the effort to bring the noted woman to this city. Nothing definite has been arrived at as yet, but it is thought that she will be brought to this city. Much interest is felt in the international normal course in the Montessori method of teaching children which is to be given in Los Angeles beginning May 1. Students working for a diploma must enter with qualifications based on four years of high school plus a two years' normal or university training, or its equivalent, and must also complete the full term of nine months under Dr. Montessori's instruction. A second group of students, composed of mothers, undergraduates and others seeking the inspirational experiences of the Montessori method under the dottoressa herself will be admitted to the summer class. This group may share all of the privileges accorded to the regular students excepting the granting of a diploma. During May and June the sessions will be held in Los Angeles; three demonstration classes will be conducted for observation lessons. The July session will be held at San Diego, where two demonstration classes are to be carried on in the high school. A feature of this demonstration will be an entirely new group of children organized so that the students may observe the work in that difficult phase, the early development. An independent Montessori school is to be conducted on the fair grounds. August may be spent in San Francisco, although all plans for this are not yet perfected."
