Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate why the Montessori approach has been viewed as a culturally congruent educational model by some Hawaiian language immersion and culture-based (HLIC) educators and how aspects of it have been used in HLIC classrooms. Data collection included semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 40 Hawaiian educators, document analysis, and visits to 12 school sites. Using grounded theory methodology, similarities in core teaching strategies based on shared values and worldview emerged. Challenges and nuanced distinctions were also revealed, along with an emerging and uniquely Hawaiian pedagogy. Findings indicate that educators and researchers should take worldview and beliefs into account when designing programs and creating both preservice and inservice training opportunities.

Abstract/Notes: Dėl šiomis dienomis vyraujančios itin didelės vaikiškų baldų pasiūlos, išsirinkti tinkamiausius baldus ikimokyklinio amžiaus vaikams yra nelengva užduotis. Vienas iš kriterijų, pagal kurį galima įrengti vaiko gyvenamąją erdvę – šeimoje taikoma vaiko ugdymo metodika. Šiame darbe pristatomas vaikiškų baldų bei namų erdvių pritaikymas individualiems vaiko poreikiams, remiantis Marijos Montessori pedagogikos koncepcija, kurios pagrindinė idėja – vaiko savarankiškas ugdymasis bei neribotas pasaulio pažinimas. Straipsnyje pristatoma vaikiškų M. Montessori baldų atsiradimo istorija, M. Montessori baldų tipai, pagrindiniai vaiko gyvenamųjų erdvių pagal M. Montessori metodiką įrengimo principai. Nuošalyje nelieka ir ekologija.

Abstract/Notes: While Montessori has flourished in small private schools in Puerto Rico since the 1950s, in 1994, the island’s first public school implemented the pedagogy as a vehicle of social transformation to provide high-quality, student-centered education in which teachers, parents, and community leaders play central roles. The success of Juan Ponce de León school ignited a thirty-year-long public Montessori movement which established Montessori programs in 45 public schools (5% of Puerto Rico’s total), created a local training center, and institutionalized a Montessori Secretariat within the Department of Education. This public movement’s achievements in transforming traditionally marginalized communities through education have influenced debates on public education, democratization, and social justice in Puerto Rico and abroad.

Abstract/Notes: This article concentrates on the importance attributed to music education by three Italian educationalists (Rosa Agazzi, Giuseppina Pizzigoni, Maria Montessori) who, at the turn of the 20th century, despite their different didactic experiences, regarded it as an essential part of an education blueprint for citizenship, starting as early as childhood.
