Abstract/Notes: Educational philosophy in elementary and secondary schools has often centered on creating a "product," full of content knowledge and basic skills (Bagby, 2002). However, no longer is academic achievement in the classroom considered the sole gauge of lifelong success. Meltzer (2010) suggested that the development of executive functioning skills utilized to reach academic achievement is equally important--skills such as prioritizing, planning, self-checking, and setting short-term and long-term goals. Being able to plan, organize, and monitor one's time are crucial skills in today's world. These three competencies are only a few of the elements of "executive function," an umbrella term referring to the cognitive processes that guide, direct, and manage thinking, emotional responses, and behavior. Dawson and Guare (2010) provided an overview of how executive function skills operate to maximize student success. The authors will consider three of these skills--planning, organization, and time management--and will illustrate how each is developed through Montessori practices.

Abstract/Notes: This qualitative study used a narrative research design to collect field texts from 40 students in first grade through college to record participants’ memories of learning in Kindergarten. The research addressed the question, “Will study participants recall more memories of self-initiated lessons and activities than other lesson types?” and explored a phenomenon experienced by the researcher during her 15 years of teaching Kindergarten that students consistently request the choice-based work time above all other activities, including recess. Data were collected from interview transcripts and analyzed in three formats: Coded Data, a Focus Word study, and an Initial Memories collection. Findings were based on the assumption that participants relayed memories that were important to them, reflecting areas of instructional importance to early childhood learning. Results in all three data formats emphatically indicated that choice, play, creativity, friends, and fun are the keys to successful, joyful early childhood learning and school experiences.

Abstract/Notes: A BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE By David Elkind Redleaf Press Paperback, $29.95 This new book, by Early Childhood expert David Elkind, trains its lens on 11 "Giants in the Nursery"-historical figures who played a major role in the evolution of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP).In the Prehistory chapter, there are oversimplifications and unclear writing: "Although the humanistic leaders of society tried to use the printing press to their own advantage, it could not put back in the bottle the cultural genie the printing press had released" (p. 15).The organizing theme of DAP is good, although some of Elkind's statements about it seem puzzling to me, such as "DAP provides the most integrated curricula of socialization, individualization, work, and play than does any other approach to education" (p. 5).
