Abstract/Notes: This chapter discusses two publications of Maria Montessori’s writings about the education of older children. The Advanced Montessori Method in two volumes (1917) addresses the needs of the Elementary child (ages 6-12). Volume I discusses a learning environment adapted to this age group including assessment and evaluation as a process self-directed by the child. It also draws attention to socio-political aspects of education, including Montessori’s view of the need to introduce “Children's Civil Rights in the 20th Century.” Volume II, outlines the didactic principles for teaching at the Elementary level. The book, From Childhood to Adolescence (1973), describes development, conceived by Montessori, as a succession of levels from childhood to maturity, considering the thread of continuity that links the different stages. The chapter concludes with an examination of the book’s appendix, Erdkinder, which portrays an environment designed to meet the needs of the Adolescent.
