Abstract/Notes: After the success of the first publications in which Maria Montessori introduced her mathematical and linguistic thinking, she devoted herself to the completion of a curriculum geared towards the Elementary level of education for children ages 6-12 years. During this phase of her research, she focused her attention on three key curricular areas: Psycho-geometry, Psycho-arithmetic, and Psycho-grammar, as she intentionally called them. These names followed her observations about how cognitive needs arise during the different phases of development. With their common prefix, psycho, Montessori’s intent was to highlight her way of understanding geometry, arithmetic, and grammar not only as disciplines to be taught but also as instruments to promote a child’s cognitive development. This chapter discusses the three books that resulted from this work: Psychogeometry, Psychoarithmetic, and Psychogrammar.
