Abstract/Notes: Montessori ideas came to Japan in 1912 and were spread in academic circles although it is unclear how much Montessori’s ideas were actually implemented in Japanese schools. Montessori education was revived in Japan in the early 1960s assisted by international and Japanese Catholic networks who disseminated Montessori education through their schools and universities. Today, Japanese Montessori schools are private and almost entirely at the preschool level with roughly 200 schools recognized by the Japan Association of Montessori which also oversees training centers. Although Montessori has stayed marginal in Japan because it has never been officially adopted in the public sector, its influence can be seen in the nationwide effort to promote child-centered learning.
