Abstract/Notes: K málo známému výročí nabízí studie analýzu života a díla Idy Jarníkové (1979–1965), jedné z nejvýznamnějších představitelek předškolní výchovy 20. století. Na základě studia archivních dokumentů studie zdůrazňuje nejen životní osudy, poprvé v ucelené podobě, ale zvláště Jarníkové představy o pedagogizaci předškolní výchovy ve prospěch rozvoje osobnosti dětí, její snahu o porozumění pedagogice Marie Montessori a péči o další vzdělávání vychovatelek v mateřských školách. Studie je doplněna výběrovou bibliografií Idy Jarníkové. [To mark the little-known anniversary, the study offers an analysis of the life and work of Ida Jarníková (1979–1965), one of the most important representatives of pre-school education in the 20th century. Based on the study of archival documents, the study emphasizes not only life destinies, for the first time in a comprehensive form, but especially Jarníková's ideas about pedagogy of preschool education for children development, her efforts to understand Maria Montessori pedagogy and care for further education of kindergarten teachers. The study is supplemented by a selected bibliography of Ida Jarníková.]

Working Memory and Executive Functions: Effects of Training on Academic Achievement

Abstract/Notes: The aim of this review is to illustrate the role of working memory and executive functions for scholastic achievement as an introduction to the question of whether and how working memory and executive control training may improve academic abilities. The review of current research showed limited but converging evidence for positive effects of process-based complex working-memory training on academic abilities, particularly in the domain of reading. These benefits occurred in children suffering from cognitive and academic deficits as well as in healthy students. Transfer of training to mathematical abilities seemed to be very limited and to depend on the training regime and the characteristics of the study sample. A core issue in training research is whether high- or low-achieving children benefit more from cognitive training. Individual differences in terms of training-related benefits suggested that process-based working memory and executive control training often induced compensation effects with larger benefits in low performing individuals. Finally, we discuss the effects of process-based training in relation to other types of interventions aimed at improving academic achievement.

Abstract/Notes: Asserts that play is a fundamental human disposition. Reviews well-known theories of play from the adult-functional perspective and examines the value of play from the child-experiential perspective. Considers variations in play and the meaning and value of true play, maintaining that play's personal, experiential value is of equal or greater importance than its developmental value. Urges teachers to resist pressures to transform play into work, and to model playfulness.
