Abstract/Notes: The Montessori method is a comprehensive, child-centered, developmentalist philosophy of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in Rome, Italy, in the early 1900s. The Montessori method differs from traditional approaches to education, and has had limited exposure in the U.S. until the last 20 years. Despite this growth, little research data exists on the effectiveness of the method or of parent understanding of the method. This research project attempted to determine parent understanding of the Montessori method of education at three Montessori schools in Massachusetts that educate children from toddlers to grade 8. The objective of the research was to design, implement, and analyze a survey that measured parent understanding of the Montessori principles and classroom practices. The survey was developed using the Montessori principles as the foundation. The goal was to determine both the extent of parent understanding of the Montessori principles and parent perception of how these principles are carried out in the Montessori classroom. Parents and guardians were asked a total of 10 questions, 7 of which were five-point Likert scales. The quantitative questions specifically addressed the six Montessori principles and were designed to test parents’ overall understanding of each principle. Responses ranged from a principle being not at all important to very important. The qualitative portion of the survey instrument utilized three open-ended, self-completed questions designed to reveal a range of parent perceptions about Montessori education and classroom practices. The surveys revealed that parent values and thinking do line up with some aspects of the Montessori method and philosophy. The surveys also revealed that parents seem to value classroom practices contrary to the founding principles. What parents value and what parents think about regarding concepts such as goal setting, achievement, competition with peers, and teachers preparing and presenting lessons is in direct contrast with some of the Montessori founding principles and intentions. If Montessori schools wish to remain viable, they will need to reconcile the Montessori principles with conflicting parent values and, further, determine how to better align their principles with parent views and desires for their children.

Abstract/Notes: Bu çalışmada eğitim felsefesinde adı çokça zikredilen Fransız filozof Jean-Jacquez Rousseau’nun, Maria Montessori tarafından kurulan ve kendi adıyla anılan Montessori eğitim yöntemi üzerindeki etkisi incelenecektir. / In this study, the effect of the French philosopher Jean-Jacquez Rousseau, whose name is mentioned a lot in educational philosophy, on the Montessori education method established by Maria Montessori and named after her will be examined. Rousseau’s famous book Emile contains a detailed explanation on the goal and function of the education. Sometimes, his approach to education caused very significant discussions and sometimes it was a source of inspiration. Maria Montessori, who is also known as Italy’s first female doctor was one of the names who was affected from his opinion in a positive way. Montessori examines the issue of education considered as helping hand approach to life from a wide perspective thanks to her education in medicine, philosophy and anthropology. In this way, she presents a more systematic and scientific based education model. On the other hand, Rousseau prefers to act according to the natural course and uses his own observations rather than being systematic in the strictest sense of the world. It is a fact that he was heavily criticized for this preference. Even though Rousseau and Maria Montessori’s ideas on the education field bring a lot of debate, the effect of both names in pedagogy cannot be ignored. However, it can be noted that Rousseau’s ideas in the field stayed only as an education design or a comment made on education. Unlike Rousseau, it is seen that Maria Montessori’s ideas were adopted in many countries and a lot of educational institutions were established in the direction of this idea. Although there is such a difference between them in the concrete field, their starting points and some of their imaginations in the field of education are similar. These similarities in the direction of a conceptual frame will be addressed in the study. Thus, Rousseau’s influence on Maria Montessori will be examined and it will be concluded that he wrote more than a novel in the field of education.

V této části se věnujeme principům Montessori pedagogiky, roli Montessori pedagoga, charakteristice prostředí i organizaci výuky, včetně forem a metod výuky. Všechny cíle výzkumu byly splněny a otázky jsme zodpověděli. Rozhovory jsme zpracovali na a základě kódování rozdělili do několika kategorií. Práce obsahuje analýzu výsledků rozhovorů a ukázky z pozorování vyučování. V závěru práce vyhodnocujeme výsledky celého výzkumu a zodpovídáme výzkumné otázky. / This bachelor’s thesis deals with the topic of the role of teacher assistant in a primary school classroom with Montessori program, focusing on the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs and on the position of a teacher assistant in Montessori learning environment. We defined the education of pupils with special educational needs, including the most frequent diagnoses we encounter during the research. The whole paper is grounded in the legislation of the Czech Republic in the field of primary education. The paper also describes alternative education and its most common varieties and includes the characteristics of the education following Maria Montessori philosophy. This part is dedicated to the principles of the Montessori method, to the role of a Montessori teacher, to the characteristics of the classroom environment as well as to the teaching organisation, including teaching forms and methods. The object of this research was to find out about the current situation in educating pupils with special educational needs and in their support in the alternative classroom environment. Another object was to describe the work of a teacher assistant in a Montessori school, defining the basic differences between their role in a Montessori school and in a traditional school. The practical part of the paper describes the implementation of a qualitative research, which was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews and the method of observation. The research objects and the research questions defined by the objects were also described in the practical part. All the research goals were achieved, and all the questions were answered. The interviews were processed and divided into several categories based on coding. The paper contains an analysis of the results of the interviews and illustrations of lesson observations. In the paper conclusion the whole research results are assessed and the research questions are answered.
