Abstract/Notes: This report moves forth to discuss the life and work of Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method. This method, which developed primarily in the early 20th century, is focused on independent learning and exploration. We will look at the formation of the Montessori Method per Maria Montessori’s background and career in the medical field and education. The paper will then assess the many components of the classroom and fundamental principles of such, thus moving further into the practice and current existence of how the method stands today.

Abstract/Notes: La pédagogie Montessori connaît actuellement un essor dans l’école maternelle publique française. [Montessori pedagogy is currently on the rise in French public nursery schools (Pre-K and Kindergarten classes). The writer proves this first in her study of the Internet networks which have been developed by teachers, then by interviewing some teachers through questionnaires. Montessori pedagogy is an answer to challenging and paradoxical institutional and societal injunctions: Teachers are assigned the double mission of fully supporting a successful schooling for all and the personal growth and fulfillment of every learner.]

Abstract/Notes: Montessori spaces and materials have often been framed as “gender neutral” or devoid of gendering practices, but there is a lack of research that has critically engaged with gender in Montessori contexts. This chapter explores current efforts to bring gender and sexuality into the conversation in Montessori circles. Using Maria Montessori’s feminist legacy as a springboard, the need for a sustained engagement with contemporary feminist research to complicate understandings of gender is justified. By utilizing contemporary feminist lens, the gender-neutral status of Montessori materials is ruffled and gender within Montessori practice and theory is re-thought as performative, relational, multiple, situated, and complex.
