Abstract/Notes: This action research project investigates the effect of providing earth-conscious materials in the art curriculum on early childhood Montessori students' environmental awareness. The participants for this study were seven preschool students at a private, home-based Montessori school in the urban Western United States. The research design was qualitative and quantitative, utilizing field notes, observational notes, behavioral tally sheets, and group conversational questionnaires to gather information on students' environmental awareness. The students' mean eco-affinity responses increased by 16%, while their mean environmental awareness responses increased by 23%. The frequency of material usage positively correlated with the frequency of environmental actions. The findings suggest that earth-conscious art materials have a positive effect on student environmental awareness. The researcher realized that increased environmental awareness does not indicate increased ecological stewardship. The conclusion of this study urges educators to reconsider the role that art curriculum and materials play on student environmental awareness.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this research was to determine whether a progress report that aligns the Montessori materials to child development benchmarks would increase parent understanding of the Montessori materials, as well as give teachers a means of reporting growth that is systematic and consistent. Trial reports were created aligning the toddler and early childhood practical life and sensorial curriculum areas to the state standards. Parents were asked to compare the current reports with the new reports. The postimplementation survey results suggested that 97% of parents better understood the alignment between the Montessori materials and child development and 100% of teachers affirmed the new reports made a clear association between the two. The new reports clarified the alignment between the Montessori materials and children’s development for parents and created a standard measurement tool for Montessori educators with the vernacular to explain the Montessori materials progression to parents.

An investigation into the theoretical concepts of Montessori to create an authentic framework for evaluating classroom materials

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: This study examined the written works of Maria Montessori to determine what she considered the foundational theories, principles, and themes of her teaching method. Fifteen themes were identified and condensed into a 26-item Activity Evaluation Checklist (AEC). The study population of 5 parents, 5 administrators, and 5 teachers used the AEC and observed 10 children performing 6 activities designed for the Montessori classroom, resulting in 90 observations. Using scores of 1 to 5 for each of the 26 items, the study results indicated an accuracy correlation between the AEC and the 6 Montessori activities of a minimum of 95%, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the AEC as a tool to evaluate materials and activities designed for the Montessori classroom. The AEC can be used to determine how closely classroom materials and activities reflect Montessori's original principles. The AEC can also be used as a guide to create or adjust classroom materials and activities so they more accurately reflect Montessori's original principles.

Abstract/Notes: This qualitative phenomenological study focuses on the development of evidence-based writing skills in the upper elementary Montessori (9–12-year-old) classroom. This study traced the lived experience in the classroom as students interacted with an original writing material and the teacher responded dynamically based on student needs by providing coaching, additional lessons based on student needs, and opportunities to revise work independently, with a partner, or with the teacher. The study measured the students’ metacognitive awareness of their confidence using the R.A.C.E. (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) strategy as a tool to successfully complete an evidence-based writing response. It also explored student retention of this writing skill four weeks after their work with an original material. Twenty-one students in a suburban upper elementary Montessori classroom housed at a 4K-6 elementary school in the Midwest participated in this study during their Montessori worktime over eight weeks from the beginning of February 2022 through mid-March 2022. Instruments included whole class discussion questions, pre-survey, ongoing teacher observations, a mid-study interview, post-survey, and a four-week post study writing sample. Results of the study supported the research design. Students showed awareness of their metacognitive process and reported that they felt more confident using the R.A.C.E. writing strategy. 10 out of 12 students (83%) showed positive trend lines in their data as they progressed through eight levels of material, even as the support built into the material decreased with each level.
