The Design of Learning Experiences: A Connection to Physical Environments.
Available from: ERIC
Annual GASCD Conference (Athens, Georgia, April 26, 1996)
Abstract/Notes: The school environment must create a rich, beautiful, dynamic, meaningful experience for students to learn; however, architects, school boards, and the state focus almost exclusively only on the building when making design decisions. This document lists specific aspects to developing a visionary campus: one that provides a three-dimensional educational experience. Characteristics of the visionary campus include smaller size campuses, multi-age groupings, decentralized buildings, information access that goes beyond written or digital form, and sustainable architecture that is ecologically sound. [The purpose of the project that will be presented below is to improve the solid waste collection system in the Montessori and Turicará schools in the city of Piura, so that this helps to improve the quality of life of both students and teachers and others. workers through the efficient and correct segregation of said waste. The project team in its final report provides all the essential information to carry out the teaching and learning of the actions necessary to recycle correctly and efficiently. In order to design a suitable system for both waste collection bins and teaching for students, the team has carried out a series of studies in schools and the environment.]

Abstract/Notes: This report on the Montessori-designed bilingual/bicultural preschool education program of the Compton (California) School District begins with a statement of need. It includes information on project arrangements, organization, and proposed preschool curriculum. It presents plans for inservice staff development and parent participation, involvement, and education. The report also presents evaluation and audit plans, day care activities, a calendar of holidays, and the requested budget. The appendixes, almost half the report, include information on job descriptions, salary schedules, personnel policies, and curriculum areas.

Passive Solar Design of a Montessori Primary School
Available from: ScienceDirect
Book Title: Energy Conservation in Buildings
Pages: 78-84

Abstract/Notes: Halcrow Gilbert Associates were requested to provide energy design advice at the post outline planning stage for a new Montessori School in Berkshire, England. The paper describes the design changes which were adopted in order to achieve both important energy savings and a dramatic improvement in the school's internal environment. The main passive solar features incorporated into the design for the school were a double storey atrium communal area, rooflights to enhance the daylighting of the classrooms and a ridge ventilator driven natural ventilation scheme. The objective was to realise well daylit classrooms whilst keeping heating costs low and minimising the risks of summertime overheating. Measures to prevent overheating included eave overhangs, blinds under the south-facing roof glazing and nighttime ventilation. The paper shows how a range of design tools were used to identify the impact of each design change on energy consumptions and environmental conditions. The paper demonstrates the benefits of sophisticated, yet flexible and fast-response, design tools which enable their users to meet the very short deadlines of a real building project. Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this thesis is to provide architects, designers, and teachers with design guidelines they must be aware of when designing for the child's environment necessary to enhance the Montessori method of teaching. This thesis is based on three types of information gathering: 1) the reading and analyzing of books written by Montessori and her followers, 2) interviews and inventories done in six Montessori schools, and 3) existing environment-behavior criteria for early child care environments. The results of this research is analyzed and design guidelines for Montessori schools proposed.
