Abstract/Notes: Mexico has a strong Montessori tradition dating back to the 1950s, with especially close connections to Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). The country is home to 9 AMI-affiliated training centers and a variety of other Montessori organizations. Today, there are an estimated 400 Montessori schools across the nation. Nearly all Montessori schools are private due to regulations that government schools follow a single curriculum. Little by little, organizations have been incorporating Montessori principles into education in less-advantaged communities including orphanages and schools serving Indigenous children.
