Abstract/Notes: Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia education remain three of the most popular models for alternative early childhood education. Each of these approaches has developed globally, with a rich history of supporting children’s educational freedom. This narrative analysis provides a means for early childhood educators and scholars to understand the aims, philosophical and theoretical frameworks, historical development, benefits, and challenges in these models and their methods of practice. As early childhood education evolves with technology and as re-conceptualizations about early education occur, an understanding of these alternatives to traditional education models is important. While adaptive options of these models may emerge in education systems across national contexts, this review allows educators to consider their applications and cultural appropriateness in specific local and community contexts.

Montessori Education: A Review of the Evidence Base

Available from: npj Science of Learning

Publication: npj Science of Learning, vol. 2

Pages: Article 11

Abstract/Notes: The Montessori educational method has existed for over 100 years, but evaluations of its effectiveness are scarce. This review paper has three aims, namely to (1) identify some key elements of the method, (2) review existing evaluations of Montessori education, and (3) review studies that do not explicitly evaluate Montessori education but which evaluate the key elements identified in (1). The goal of the paper is therefore to provide a review of the evidence base for Montessori education, with the dual aspirations of stimulating future research and helping teachers to better understand whether and why Montessori education might be effective.

Cattolici, educazione infantile e metodo montessoriano. La posizione della rivista "Pro Infantia" fra età giolittiana e fascismo / Catholics, early childhood education and the Montessori method. The position of the journal "Pro Infantia" across the Giolitti and Fascist Eras.

Abstract/Notes: The essay examines the opinions formulated by the journal «Pro Infantia» about the Montessori method, within the lively debate that this approach elicited among both secular and Catholic groups. A review of the contents of the periodical – which was produced by La Scuola publishing house in Brescia – shows that after initially considering Montessori’s work with interest, the publication adopted a more prudent and critical attitude. This stance became more radically pronounced in the 1920s, when, despite growing attention to the Montessori method in some of the leading Catholic circles, «Pro Infantia» began to voice strong criticism of it.
