Abstract/Notes: Thesis description: The subject of our thesis is Montessori pedagogy in day care. In our bachelor’s thesis we deal with early childhood education in general and present the main ideas of the Montessori method. We also compare day care centers that go by the principales of the montessori pedagogy with conventional day care centers. Theoretical summary: The Montessori method is one form of alternative pedagogy. The main question of our bachelor’s thesis is: What special features does the Montessori method bring to the activities in Montessori day care centers? In addition we will examine how the idea of the child being in the center of the day care shows in the activities of the day care center. Methodological summary: The research material has been collected with the theme interwiev method and the material has been analysied using the content analysis method. We have interwieved the employees of some Montessori day care centers. Main results: The most significant special features of the Montessori method in early childhood education are the emphasizing of individuality, the child being in the center and the partnership of the parents and the day care center. Also the role of the kndergarten teacher and the environment are different. Play has a different kind of role and there are children of different ages in the group. Conclusions: The greatest strenghts of the Montessori method are individuality, the holistic wiew of development and the child-centred approach of The Montessori method will support the beneficial development of the child’s self-esteem. Key words: Early childhood education, the Montessori method, day care / Opinnäytetyön kuvaus: Opinnäytetyömme aihe on montessoripedagogiikka varhaiskasvatuksessa. Käsittelemme työssämme varhaiskasvatusta yleisesti ja esittelemme montessoripedagogiikan pääpiirteissään. Vertailemme myös montessoripedagogiikkaa toteuttavia päiväkoteja tavallisiin päiväkoteihin. Teoreettinen ja käsitteellinen esittely: Montessoripedagogiikka on yksi vaihtoehtoisten pedagogioiden malleista. Päätutkimuskysymyksemme on mitä erityistä montessoripedagogiikka tuo montessoripäiväkotien toimintaan. Abstract/Notes: I investigated the effect of introducing cooperative games during recess to reduce aggressive behaviors in preschool-age children. The action research was done at an intentionally culturally and socio-economically diverse Montessori school in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 23 children involved were all children from the three to six age group who take daily naps. I recorded every aggressive incident I saw before, during, and after the intervention. I also recorded what cooperative activities I introduced for the intervention. Once before and after the intervention I asked the children if they enjoyed recess. I recorded observational notes such as weather conditions, and what activities the children chose each day. The data did not show that the cooperative games had a significant effect on the number of aggressive incidents recorded. Many more boys than girls were involved in aggressive incidents. There was no significant change in how the children reported their enjoyment of recess. Aggressive behavior could possibly be reduced through another action research project with a longer intervention period, a conflict resolution plan, and more purposeful activities for the children outside.

Lasten ja Aikuisten Yhteisö: Lasten osallisuuden toteutuminen ja vertaaminen tavallisen päiväkotiryhmän ja montessoripedagogiikkaa toteuttavan päiväkotiryhmän kesken [Community of Children and Adults: Realization of children's participation and comparison between a regular daycare group and a daycare group that implements Montessori pedagogy]

Abstract/Notes: The aim of this bachelor´s thesis is to investigate the way in which participatory pedagogy is used in two different early education groups. The aim is also to find out how the two groups differ in terms of the participation of children, as one was an average Finnish early education group, while the other was a group, which used Montessori pedagogy. The thesis also introduces an idea of a joint community of adults and children and how participatory pedagogy enhances the experience of community. The purpose of the thesis is to add understanding and encourage the use of participatory pedagogy in the day-to-day life of early education groups. The theoretical section discusses the notion of participatory pedagogy and how it is used from the point of view of the basic functions of an early education group. The central ideas behind Montessori pedagogy are also discussed. The thesis is qualitative, as the data was collected by observing two different early education groups for a week in May 2016. The results of the bachelor´s thesis show that participation has become an increasingly important factor in early education and that it is used in different ways. It was also evident that the individuality of children is valued and that participation is seen important in the daily life of the early education groups studied. Both the early education groups studied value the importance of communication between parents and teachers. Adults play an important role in the implementation of participation and they need to collect information about the children and apply it. It is also necessary for the adults to be able to develop the basic ways of using participation in the daily life of an early education group. Osallisuus on nähty tärkeäksi jokapäiväisessä arjessa. Aikuisilla on merkittävä rooli lasten osallisuuden toteutumisessa, heidän tulee kerätä lapsista tietoa ja osata hyödyntää tätä, lisäksi aikuisilta vaaditaan taitoa osata kehittää osallisuutta vahvistavia toimintatapoja päiväkodin arkeen.
