Abstract/Notes: Presents fundamentals of systems thinking and sustainability within an ecological theory to shape education to the needs of human development in relation to the environment. Emphasizes that effective learning is a system embedded in the web of life, giving humans the ability to see the interconnectedness of the environment, community, and the natural world. Maintains that systems theory is a new way of seeing the world as living connections. (Author/KB)

Making a Difference: A History of the Auckland College of Education, 1881-2004
See More
Abstract/Notes: Where was Auckland's first normal school? And why was it 'normal'? How did sport become such an integral part of Auckland schoolchildren's lives? What is the extraordinary story behind the striking layout of the Epsom campus? Who built an underground room, and patrolled the college grounds with rifles and fixed bayonets? Why, until recently, did Auckland's teachers have their own specialised training institution? All these questions are answered in this fascinating history of the Auckland College of Education and its forerunners, from its modest beginnings in the late nineteenth century through to the recent merger of the college with the University of Auckland in 2004. It documents not only the transformation of the institution, but also the college community. Includes a discusion about Margaret Slingsby Newman's efforts with the Montessori method in New Zealand.

Abstract/Notes: This chapter discusses three of Maria Montessori’s writings about the education of young children, The Child in the Family (1936), The Secret of Childhood (1936), and The Absorbent Mind (1949). These chapters reflect her belief that education should begin at birth and that children should be encouraged to learn autonomously with respect for their own interests and timelines. The first book is a collection of texts from Montessori’s 1923 conferences in Brussels which provide the conceptual foundations and emerging practices of her innovative pedagogical vision focusing on the child from birth in a new way. In the second book, Montessori outlines her philosophy and pedagogy for a child’s education until age six, presenting a deeper look into the educational method developed for preschool-aged children. The third book focuses primarily on a child’s psychological development and is Montessori’s final work on the first six years of life.
