Abstract/Notes: Chapter two presents a biography of Maria Montessori and describes the key elements in her method when George, Naumburg, Pyle, and Parkhurst were students in her training courses. By 1910, Montessori had constructed the core features of her educational theory, known as the Montessori Method. Her educational theory was based on her medical education at the University of Rome, her work with children with mental disabilities, her intensive reading of the pioneer special education educators, Itard and Sequin, pedagogical anthropology and her first school, the Casa dei Bambini, in 1908, in Rome’s impoverished San Lorenzo district. Montessori’s view of the child holistically encompassed physical, sensory, muscular, social, intellectual, and moral development. All children, she believed, like all people, shared a universal human nature which led to common modes of development. Focusing on early childhood education, ages three to six, Montessori’s key principles were: children need liberty to fulfill their inner need to develop fully through their own self-, or auto-education; their self-education is optimal in a prepared structured learning environment with accessible didactic apparatus and material which they are free to choose and work out their own self- development; the first level of instruction develops sensory, muscular, and practical skills which lead to higher level cognitive, cultural, and literary skills. Montessori was recognized as an educational innovator in Europe but not widely known in the United States. George, Naumburg, Pyle, and Parkhurst played significant roles in introducing Montessori to Americans and in implementing the Montessori Method in the United States.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori and Lev Vygotsky believed that children learn best through having personal experiences and social interactions with the people and the environment around them (Lawrence & Snow, 2011; Montessori, 1995; Vygotsky, 1978). Students lose important general classroom instructional time and learning opportunities when they are pulled out to receive reading intervention lessons. When teachers collaborate and approach reading intervention in a connected way, while providing explicit instruction to the students, learning is capitalized. Grounded in the Sociocultural theory, this study and project aimed to address the learning needs of students who struggle with reading in the primary grades of the general education classroom. Anchored in culturally responsive teaching techniques, the research in this project highlight ways teachers are able to respect the diverse student populations housed in American classrooms in respectful and motivating ways. The methods used in this study was in the form of qualitative and quantitative research through conducting surveys. Survey participants were Lead Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and Reading Specialists in a Montessori Setting. The results of the feedback received from the surveys tailored the handbook of resources that will help meet the reading needs for students who struggle with learning how to read. Additionally, this study provides recommendations in addressing reading motivation and identifying the responsibilities of literacy professionals at the school and network level that are rooted in International Literacy Association Standards.

Abstract/Notes: Anne E. George, the first American trained as a directress by Montessori in 1910, is significant as the paramount Montessori educator in the United States from 1910 to 1915. George, who established the first American Montessori school in Tarrytown, New York in 1911, was also the English-language translator of Montessori’s book, The Montessori Method (1912). Alexander Graham Bell and his wife, Mabel, intent on promoting Montessori education, established the national Montessori Educational Association, with George as its Director of Research. George was also the headmistress of the Montessori schools supported by the Bells in Washington, DC. In addition, George was Montessori’s aide and translator during her extensive lecture tour in 1913. Montessori’s relationship with George deteriorated. Montessori revoked Anne George’s credentials as a Montessori directress in 1915. The ever-loyal George, who strived to replicate the Montessori Method in American private schools, and, once, the premier American Montessori educator, was discredited by her mentor. After her marriage in 1919, George never returned to the field of education.
