Abstract/Notes: "Before 400 students, teachers and members of the women's board of the Exposition, Madame Maria Montessori, the noted educator of Rome, spoke last night in the auditorium of the Normal school on 'The Development of the Individual Through Work.' Madame Montessori said in part that the teacher should not make a practice of imposing tasks upon a child, but give it an opportunity to work out problems for itself. This method, she explained, allows the child to work out easy problems that appeal to it, after which it moves naturally to more difficult problems. The speaker was introduced by Ernest White, a member of the Normal school board of trustees."
