Abstract/Notes: Lili Peller's "The Children's House" essay begins where Maria Montessori left off in her description of space articulations. Peller does not name Montessori specifically as she always had a desire to become independent in her own right as a neo-Freudian child analyst. But the Haus Der Kinder founded in summer of 1922 suggests a total Montessori influence as it calls for "adventures in space" with house-like rooms for different functions, both for play and for work, for practical functions: library, kitchen, workshop, quiet room, alcoves, nooks, and terraces for special individual work, with all spaces focusing on the relationships between indoor and outdoor environments. Abstract/Notes: The Alpha point of the authors' life as a Montessori educator began in 1959, when he was a graduate student studying philosophy at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. While studying the works of the great American philosopher William James, the author came across the writings of Maria Montessori and immediately became captivated by her insights concerning the development of the virtuous child through personal experiential learning. He wrote a paper comparing her observations with those of John Dewey and afterward set out to find an opportunity to place himself in some elementary school so he might observe and encourage this philosophical development of children. His teaching career began teaching Philosophy and Latin in a school in Greenwich, Connecticut to children from very privileged families. He then describes the omega point of his career as having been called to serve the very poorest of children housed in an orphanage in Ladyville, a small village in Belize, in Central America. As a veteran Montessorian, he had been asked to help the Liberty Children's Home in Ladyville build and equip a world-class Montessori school.

The Influence of Preschool Teachers' Beliefs on Young Children's Conceptions of Reading and Writing

Abstract/Notes: Examines the relationship between two preschool program directors' and teachers' beliefs, instructional decisions, and preschool children's conceptions of reading and writing. Results show that preschool children's conceptions of reading and writing reflected the practices of the two programs. (Author/BB) Directors of two preschool programs were interviewed regarding their orientations toward reading and writing instruction. Ten children from each program were interviewed regarding their conceptions of reading and writing. One school was found to have a “mastery of specific skills/text-based” orientation, and the other was found to have a “holistic/reader-based” orientation. A relationship was found between preschool program's orientations toward reading and writing instruction and children's ideas about reading and writing. The relationships between preschool practices and children's conceptions are examined. Implications for the influence of preschool teacher's beliefs and instructional decisions on children's conceptions of reading and writing are discussed.
