Abstract/Notes: [...]when the students have mastered the contents of the manual and the use of dive equipment in the pool, they are ready to practice their skills in the open ocean and eventually to conduct underwater research for any number of inquiry-based marine science projects. Because MHOK is a relatively small school (60-75 students, depending on the year), its Upper Elementary and Middle School students are combined in one classroom (usually 16-24 students)-which MHOK refers to as its "Upper School"-with a head teacher responsible for coordinating the entire fourth- through eighth-year curricula. In addition to studying the physical aspects of coral, students also investigated the ecological and economic importance of coral, discovering five main uses: 1) food-500 million people worldwide rely on fish that live in coral reefs, and $31 million is generated annually from worldwide fish sales; 2) habitat-corals not only provide habitat for a wide variety of fish and marine invertebrates but also provide areas for spawning, mating, and feeding; 3) tourism-places with healthy reefs earn hundreds of millions of dollars per year from tourist activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving; 4) medicine-coral reefs are important sources for ingredients in medicines to treat heart disease, cancer, poisonous stings, and burns and for general skin care; and 5) coastal protection-coral reefs provide stability to coastlines and protection against ocean storms and floods, and also help to slow down wave breaks and even tsunamis. Abstract/Notes: The technology program I designed begins at age 5, with increasing opportunities for computer use as a child progresses through Elementary. Eye Strength/Spatial Awareness * Both spatial awareness and eye muscle strength/ coordination are necessary to view a large projected image on the teacher demonstration screen and find the identical smaller image on the monitor. * An ability to orient space on the page (top to bottom, left to right) is necessary to orient the visual images on the computer screen. LIFE CYCLE OF THE BUTTERFLY OR FROG In this project, often completed at the end of the first year of technology lessons, students show what they know about previously learned science content by following teacher-directed instructions to create a document that displays the life cycle of the butterfly or frog, using images, shapes, and text boxes. [...]students: * create a newsletter with articles and images describing their summer vacations. * use slideshow presentations to visually support an oral report presented to the class. * input statistical data for all countries within a continent into a spreadsheet and then use sorting and formulas to investigate and analyze that data. * create videos detailing numerous aspects of the country they represent at the Montessori Model UN. * create and contribute to a classroom blog. * design and create paper programs for the school chorus concert or graduation ceremony. * design and create the school yearbook.

Abstract/Notes: Richardson was very influential in Joyce Pickering's lifelong work with children with learning difficulties, and, with the publication of this book, their partnership is now a gift to those of us who work with children in Montessori environments. Pickering addresses development in the first plane (birth to age 6), including variances in development that can help us identify learning differences, and stresses the importance of early intervention. Pickering devotes the first few chapters to early childhood development, including language development, and points out the variations in development that we adults need to be aware of in order to help children who might learn differently.
