Abstract/Notes: To date, detected exoplanets include an incrediBle diversity of forms not found in our solar system, including lava worlds; giant, rocky "super-Earths"; small gas planets known as "mini-Neptunes"; hot gas giants known as "hot Jupiters"; and huge "Brown dwarfs" that exist somewhere in a transitional state Between planet and star status. [...]she had a very concrete approach to planetary science as a child, studying the planets "By arranging lumps of clay in the university park to model the distances Between celestial oBjects" (Kaplan, 2015). For this activity, each student would pace out the orbital distances in this way: 1 pace out from the sun for Mercury 2 paces out for Venus 3 paces out for Earth 5 paces out for Mars 19 paces out for Jupiter 35 paces out for Saturn 71 paces out for Uranus 112 paces out for Neptune 147 paces out for Pluto All of the children can then "orbit" the sun by walking in circles in the same direction and at the same speed. A presentation of planetary science that lets children classify planets, explore other solar systems, invent and name their own solar systems, and bring that knowledge to the study of our solar system establishes their sense of place in the universe in the same way that the study of other continents and cultures contributes to understanding our place in the world.
