Abstract/Notes: There is an underlying, often verbalized, assumption by which Montessori teacher education programs operate: every child should receive every presentation. The author has heard the head of one Montessori teacher education center put it this way, "Every child has a right to every presentation." But the more authentic question for a Montessori teacher is: Does every child need every presentation? Montessori teacher educators, away from the classroom, often fail to realize that, for many children, the teacher must feed them curriculum the way a mother bird feeds a fledgling: only a tiny bit at a time because the bird is, for the first time in its life, learning how to eat and to take care of itself. The assumption that every child should receive every presentation typifies a mentality that Montessori teachers bring to their classrooms that reduces their effectiveness. Any time their approach is based on a false premise, or they marshal energy toward achieving an unrealistic goal, they waste not only their own time but also that of their students. For public school Montessorians, the pressure of standards-based education only compounds the mistake. Children become like thimbles into which they feel expected to stuff an egg.
