Abstract/Notes: In 2002, Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) adopted a policy committing itself to develop all schools in the district as community learning centers. In Pleasant Ridge, one of Cincinnati's most racially and socio-economically diverse neighborhoods, the community set itself to the task of rebuilding what had been a failing school that reflected little of the neighborhood's diversity. After-school programming to provide extracurricular opportunities emerged as a top priority, as did health and wellness services. Another priority was the development of the Pleasant Ridge school facility as an environmentally sound and sustainable "green" building. Yet, despite the promise of an environmentally cutting-edge school and partnerships ranging from the YMCA to various health providers, all of this was not sufficient to attract new families to the school. And so, just as the environmental enthusiasts were leading a grassroots effort to dramatically change the plans for the physical facility, a group of young parents became involved in challenging the academic program. This group, mostly parents of infants and toddlers, asked themselves, "What would it take for us to send our children to this new school?" Their collective answer was a conversion to a Montessori program.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori education was born in Italy more than a century ago and today it is widespread in at least 36 countries around the world. In Italy, from 2016 to 2021, the number of Montessori primary schools more than doubled. This explanatory and exploratory research is the most comprehensive evaluation of Montessori education ever conducted in Italy. We investigated: a) the impact of Montessori education on academic and socio-emotional outcomes; b) the profiles of Montessori primary school teachers and the extent to which they implemented Montessori education with fidelity. The longitudinal study on the academic outcomes was conducted on 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th grade students in two separate cohorts. The results demonstrate that, depending on the grade and the cohort considered, Montessori students achieve similar or significantly higher scores than non-Montessori students. In some cases, they achieve more heterogeneous scores, especially in mathematics. More heterogeneous scores were expected according to the hypothesis that Montessori education aims to develop the characteristics of each one and not to standardize academic outcomes. The study on the socio-emotional outcomes was conducted on 8th grade students and it demonstrates that Montessori students achieve significantly higher scores on the empathy scale. The survey on the teachers permitted to delineate 3 different profiles of them, thanks to a cluster analysis. Only the first group of teachers, which made up half of the sample, managed to implement Montessori education with fidelity. These findings highlight two main requirements. The first is the need to continue monitoring and guiding the diffusion of Montessori education among Italian primary schools, to improve and maintain fidelity. The second concerns the reaffirmation of the value of educational practices and the principles of Montessori activism as possible answers that are still valid to the new needs of the Italian school.

[This research is a literature study that aims to find out how the description of the stimulation of the ability to recognize the concept of numbers for early childhood through Montessori math games. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method with literature study. In this literature study the researcher uses various written sources such as articles, journals, and documents relevant to the research in this study. This study focuses on the discourse on the ability to recognize the concept of numbers in early childhood which can be done through Montessori math games. This is an important part of implementing learning in PAUD because it stimulates the ability to recognize children's number concepts from an early age because it will have a major impact on children's cognitive abilities which are also very useful for their future. The results of this study indicate that Montessori math games are very effective in stimulating the ability to recognize number concepts in early childhood. This is evident from the evidence that has been researched from the results of previous studies relating to the ability to recognize the concept of children's numbers through Montessori math games.]

[The state of research on Montessori schools has occasionally been summarized in such a way that Montessori students at all school levels were attested a performance advantage in most school subjects. A closer examination reveals that this is hardly evidence-based, as no significant or constant differences in favor of the Montessori students were found in three of the six available studies, and in the other three studies as well, performance advantages for the Montessori students could mostly only be proven in the mathematical field. This tendential mathematical advantage is often explained with the use of special, clear and sensual working materials that are typically used in Montessori pedagogy. Overall, however, the strengths of the Montessori schools seem to lie more in the area of interdisciplinary learning and the design of satisfactory learning situations. Here, the studies show relatively consistent clear advantages in favor of the Montessori schools.]
