Do Spatial Characteristics Influence Behavior and Development in Early Childhood Education and Care?

Abstract/Notes: There is increasing awareness that the physical environment plays a critical role in young children's cognitive and social development, by offering opportunities for exploration and interaction. In this article a narrative review is presented of 19 studies, published between 1987 and 2017, into the relation between spatial characteristics of the indoor play environment of center-based early childhood care and education settings and children's social and cognitive behavior and development. Studies involved children between six months and six years of age. Several studies reported consistent, interesting outcomes. A layout with an open-zoned arrangement, enabling children to keep eye contact with the caregiver was found to stimulate children to use the space more fully. Designated activity areas for activities such as pretend play and construction elicited different types of social and cognitive behaviors. However, the number of studies is small, and very diverse, both in content and in methodology. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Designing the Montessori Coaching Tool Elementary Rubric for Early-Career Professional Development

Abstract/Notes: Becoming a competent Montessori Elementary guide is a complex process, so we are developing the Montessori Coaching Tool Elementary (MCT-EL) rubric to describe teaching-practice expectations for self-reflection and formative feedback during the critical early period in a teacher’s development. The purpose of this article is to share results from a small-scale, online survey collecting both qualitative and quantitative feedback on the rubric from experienced Montessori Elementary teacher educators. The rubric’s content was based on Maria Montessori’s writings and welldocumented Montessori practices, which we translated to specific teacher behaviors and developmental progressions. We wanted to gauge the MCT-EL rubric’s usefulness and appropriateness from the perspective of experts who have significant depth of experience mentoring new teachers. The rubric was not developed to be used for performance evaluation, promotion, or retention but rather for early-career Montessori teachers’ self-reflection. It provides a framework for coaching conversations between the early-career Montessori teacher and a Montessori mentor. Results from the study identified overall support for use of the MCT-EL rubric with developing teachers, along with specific recommendations for revisions, additions, and deletions. Using a thorough review of the data, we developed a refined MCT-EL rubric, which is provided in Appendix B and is available for use by interested practitioners in the field.

In the Children's Museums, the use of hands and the simultaneous use of different senses are irreplaceable tools able to allow the child's mind to test themselves, to express themselves in all its potential, and to reflect and learn what they are observing and experimenting.

The Pedagogy of interiority, realized in the House of children, it’s revealed to be of great actuality in times that seems to be marked from the predominance of the gossip and fugacity. The lesson of Maria Montessori, attentive and caring for the interior life of the child, offers to the new generations practices of authentic religiousness, answering to a current need for the dimension of the sacred, more and more diffused in times of globalization. Starting from the suggestions of Maria Montessori, the contemporary Pedagogy launches again the childhood as a new resource for the adult and engages and commits itself for transforming every place of education into a laboratory of peace and for an authentic democracy.

Abstract/Notes: This study compared Montessori and day care compensatory programs for disadvantaged children. Students in the treatment programs were compared to a disadvantaged control group and an advantaged middle-class control group on eight tests of cognitive skill and on a composite factor score derived from the eight tests as a single summary index. Analysis indicated that treatment differences existed on six of the nine analyses. Both preschool programs were effective in raising levels of performance beyond those of other disadvantaged Students and both approached middle class levels of performance, yet the treatment groups did not differ from each other.
