Abstract/Notes: Paula Leigh-Doyle uses "joyful engagement" as the main criterion for a child's success in the Montessori classroom. She defines joyful engagement in terms of Montessori's solid foundation of mind-body integration, suggesting "ways to slip port the child's nervous system (usually through movement) so that they may feel grounded, integrated, and able to process information to the fullest of their potential." For both the primary and elementary levels, she offers ways to evaluate any proposed intervention in light of whether it is compatible with the Montessori goals of joyful engagement and increasing independence. Abstract/Notes: John McNamara's historically rich descriptions of his adolescent community life in one school where he taught the same children from grade one to grade eight sends a warm message of the merge of elementary and middle-school personalities as they are beginning to understand the wonder of growing up. Their letters and speeches remember the impact of their Montessori community as they look at their own knowledge and humanity. His students speak simple truths about how their school made them comfortable with themselves, their classmates, and their work in the past and present and for the future. Abstract/Notes: Rick Mosher's coining of the word "Urbkinder" reminds us that the city provides a broad environment for learning with key experiences being defined by the student's choice of in-depth involvement. Quoting John Long, these city experiences are real, engaging, connected to thought, allow for personal reflection, and rely on the teaching moment. Rick Mosher feels that the urban experience should be clearly differentiated from that of the work on the land, but his characterization of the needs and tendencies of adolescents shows little difference from unfolding development on the farm.
